  2. On The Plantation From the start of Jamestown, plantations became important to the southern colonies. They learned to make new crops • Tobacco • rice • indigo they made more and more plantations.

  3. Question 1 What were the new three new crops that were in the southern colonies?

  4. Early Plantations Early plantations were usually built in the rich soil of the southern tidewater. Tidewater is low-lying land along a coast. Waterways in area made it easy to get crops to markets by boat. Crop buyers from England traveled the waterways with English-made goods such as shoes, lace, thread, farm tools, and dishes.

  8. A BIG Problem Because crops hurt the soil, they had to clear more and more land. 
