  2. Everybody's Story This is a story about four people: Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when actually Nobody asked Anybody.

  3. What happens... ...if the doctors don't cooperate each other in operation theatre? They need a proper teamwork to make their effort successful.

  4. ...if the workers don't coordinate , resources can be misused. There must be a good teamwork for better output

  5. Do you work better alone or as a part of a team ? Why ? Write down “alone” or “team” at the top of your meta card and mention any 5 reasons for that.

  6. Why do we join Teams ?What are the benefits and down sides of working in team ?

  7. Why do we join Teams ?benefits - to satisfy interest and goals - to share and learn - to build the relationship - to get protection - to enhance knowledge and skills - to hide weakness - to get better output - to interact different personalities - to make effective decision

  8. Downsides of a team In a team, only a few people may contribute (others are silent, indifferent, afraid to contribute) Shy and introvert members can’t learn Few members may dominate the group Arguments and disagreements may arise Time and resources consuming

  9. What do we understand by Team • How do we characterize it ?

  10. Leadership and members • Common goals • Clear roles and responsibilities • Joint efforts • Interdependency • Sharing and listening • Room for openness and trust • Respect and Loyalty

  11. Group of two or more interdependent individuals who interact with one another to achieve a common goal

  12. teams don’t work without teamwork. • It is the glue which keeps a team together, the oil that makes the team work.

  13. Team work • “It is the ability to work together toward a common vision. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.” -Andrew Carnegie

  14. "Process of establishing and developing a greater sense of collaboration and trust between members"

  15. "various activities undertaken to motivate and increase the overall performance of the team"

  16. There are two major pillars in a Team Team Leader MembersWithout accepting each other the team can not perform wellWhat do we expect from each other in a team ?As A Team Leader as Team Members

  17. Team work skills • Listening (listen first, speak second) • Questioning • Persuading • Respecting • Helping • Sharing • Participating

  18. Stages in Team Building (American organizational psychologist Bruce Tuckman in 1965) • Forming • Storming • Norming • Performing • Adjourning

  19. Forming • Stage of initial orientation and interpersonal testing • The members of the team get to know one another, • Seeking and exchange some personal information, and make new friends • Desire to be accepted by others • Gathering impressions about each other

  20. Storming • Stage of conflict over the task and the way of operating • Conflict arises for power, leadership and decision making • competition and strained relationships among team members. (emotional and tensed) • This is the most critical stage for the team.

  21. Norming • At this stage, come to a mutual plan for the team • Agree with others to make the team function • Roles are defined • Rules, values, behaviour, method and procedures are established

  22. Performing • By this time, members are motivated and knowledgeable. • Competent, autonomous and able to handle the decision-making process without supervision. • Participative • Strong commitment • Achievement oriented

  23. Adjourning (Deforming or Mourning) • Task complete • Revision, analysis and evaluation of achievements • Strategies • Disassembled

  24. Stages of a Team

  25. Why do Teams fail ?

  26. Why do Teams fail ? • Barriers to effective team • Lack of efficient leadership-no vision • undefined roles and responsibilities • Unclear and lack of communication • Vested interests and egos-power struggle • Distrust, uncooperative • No motivation

  27. Why do Teams fail ? • Failure to understand the work style differences( the hedgehog) • Lack of networking with -insiders, outsiders • Poor time management. • Poor conflict management skills. • Lack of interpersonal team building skills.

  28. The hedgehogs It was the coldest winter ever. Many animals died because of the cold. The hedgehogs, realizing the situation, decided to group together to keep warm. This way they covered and protected themselves; but the quills of each one wounded their closest companions. After awhile, they decided to distance themselves one from the other and they began to die, alone and frozen. So they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their companions or disappear from the Earth.

  29. continue Wisely, they decided to go back to being together. They learned to live with the little wounds caused by the close relationship with their companions in order to receive the heat that came from the others. This way they were able to survive. The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people, but when each individual learns to live with the imperfections of others and can admire the other person's good qualities.

  30. Group Dynamics and Roles • Kurt Lewin, a social psychologist and change management expert, used the term "Group Dynamics" in early 1940s first time. • Expressed the roles and behaviours of people when they work in a group

  31. Why people don’t always feel comfortable in a team ? There are many characters in a team Lion(autocrat):tries to dominate or constantly interrupt Owl(show Off): talks and thinks as they know all the answers. Butterfly(opportunist): keeps changing the topic before others are ready. Hyena(aggressor): doesn't show respect to others, comments negatively about them.

  32. Sheep(avoider): refuses to focus on the task or on group relationship problems. • Monkey(Critic): always sees the negative side to any argument, but never suggests alternatives. Puts down the ideas of others. • Cat(help seeker): looks for sympathy from others • Self-confessor: uses the group as a forum for inappropriate talk about self. • Pigeon(Clown): shows no involvement in group and engages in distracting communication.
