  1. CAREER PLANNING for parents

  2. “Find your passion and the money will follow” “Follow your passion” “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life” “…the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking”. -Steve Jobs

  3. Misguided advice? • Passions are developed, not “found” • (little evidence that most people have pre-existing passions waiting to be discovered) • New interests develop over time • Opportunities arise • Focus on strengths instead of passions

  4. “Compelling careers often have complex origins that reject the simple idea that all you have to do is follow your passion.” “when they fail to find this certainty, bad things follow, such as chronic job-hopping and crippling self-doubt.” Telling someone to “follow their passion” is not just an act of innocent optimism, but potentially the foundation for a career riddled with confusion and angst. -Cal Newport: So Good They Can’t Ignore You

  5. Mark Cuban (“Shark Tank” panelist & owner of the Dallas Mavericks): One of the great lies of life is 'follow your passions’. You may not be any good at what you are passionate about. Instead, follow your effort – where you choose to put in the time & effort tend to be things you are good at, and what you will get better at – follow that instead.

  6. “A career is not something that you put on like a coat. It is something that grows organically around you, step-by-step, choice-by-choice, and experience-by-experience. Everything adds up. No work is beneath you. Nothing is a waste of time unless you make it so”. -Wade Davis (Anthropologist, author) http://www.graduationwisdom.com/speeches/0141-Graduation-speech-Wade-Davis-2010.htm
