Define what soft skills are, what are the 2 synonyms given for soft skills, and provide one example of a soft skill.

  5. CAREER PLANNING • YOU CAN’T SUCESSFULLY PLAN FOR THE FUTURE UNLESS YOU KNOW YOURSELF. • IF YOU HATE WATER, THEN DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO CHOOSE A CAREER AS A MARINE BIOLOGIST OR DEEP-SEA DIVER? • CAREER PLANNING BEGINS WITH SELF ASSESSMENT.

CAREER GETTING/KEEPING • IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR JOB, YOU NEED TO BE BETTER AT IT THAN OTHER PEOPLE THAT WANT IT AS WELL. • AS TECHNOLOGY HAS MADE COMMUNICATION/TRAVEL FASTER, THERE ARE NOW MORE PEOPLE IN COMPETITION FOR YOUR JOB. YOU AREN’T JUST COMPETING WITH SEVERAL HUNDRED PEOPLE IN AMHERST COUNTY. YOU ARE IN COMPETITION WITH 3 BILLION PEOPLE GLOBALLY. • WHAT DOES A BOSS LOOK FOR WHEN HIRING/KEEPING AN EMPLOYEE? • GOOD ATTITUDE • STRONG WORK ETHIC • NECESSARY SKILLS • LEARNING TO ADAPT TO NEW TECHNOLOGY

  7. Student self-assessment tests • Now you will spend some time taking some self-assessment tests • Please be as HONEST as possible in answering the ?s, and we will discuss some of the results when everyone’s completed the assessments

  8. CAREER ADVANCEMENT • THE MORE EDUCATION YOU GET, THE HIGHER YOUR PAY WILL USUALLY BE. EVEN FOR JOBS THAT DON’T REQUIRE A COLLEGE DEGREE, YOU USUALLY GET PAID MORE IF YOU HAVE MORE TRAINING. • IF YOU WANT TO MAKE MONEY, YOU NEED TO BE A STUDENT!

  9. RESPONSIBILITY • GETTING A JOB IS ONLY THE FIRST PART OF THE BATTLE. • YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND MANAGE YOUR MONEY SO YOU CAN KEEP YOUR JOB AND HAVE MONEY COMING IN. THIS IS CALLED FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY. • BE CAREFUL HOW YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY • SAVE MONEY WHEN YOU CAN(OR INVEST IT IN SOLID BUSINESS DEALS) • BUY INSURANCE • KEEP A BUDGET • DON’T OVERUSE YOUR CREDIT CARD • GET CONTRACTS AND KEEP TRACK OF WARRANTIES
