  3. National Census Microdata • individual records for the censuses of 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000 • two harmonized individual data sets: • 1970-2000 • 1990-2000 • 2005 PUS covering the censuses of 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000 (5% sample of individuals)

History (1) • November 8, 2005: Bob McCaa visits SFSO – first discussion and general agreement to participate in project • February 2006: first delivery of documentation (metadata) • November 2006: start of discussions with Statistical Methods Unit regarding new household sample • January 2007: first internal discussion about data confidentiality issues

  5. History (2) • May 2007: drawing of new 5% household sample • September 2007: University of Minnesota approves wording of specimen contract • May 13, 2008: SFSO Director-General signs data protection contract ( = green light for data delivery) • June 23, 2008: microdata delivered to IPUMS

  6. Metadata • census forms person/household/building • explanations to census forms (1980 and 1990 only) • instructions to enumerators • (in German, French, Italian)

  7. Microdata (1) • sample drawn from the 1970-2000 harmonized data set • → certain drawbacks for IPUMS harmonization effort: • some original variables already recoded and reduced (loss of information) • no composite coding scheme used
