  7. Eurodiaconia’s definition • Poverty is a multidimensional reality. There are also relational and spiritual aspects of poverty • Poverty is a lack of well-being including precarious circumstances typically characterized by a permanent lack of financial resources. • Social exclusion and isolation Poverty and Social Injustice in Europe

Social exclusion • Isolation: a lack of relationships and social links, whatever one‘s socio-economic condition • Poverty leads to social exclusion and social exclusion leads to poverty, but they are not the same. • Lack of participation (for children such as sports or music clubs) Poverty and Social Injustice in Europe

Social exclusion is used to emphasise the processes which push people to the edge of society, which limit their access to resources and opportunities, curtail their participation in normal social and cultural life leaving them feeling marginalised, powerless and discriminated against.  Poverty and Social Injustice in Europe

Who is at risk of poverty? • Women: work and pay are still not equally distributed in all EU Member States. • Minorities and migrants • People with disabilities • Elderly people: generally more exposed to poverty due to low pensions; their poverty rate reaches 25% in some countries • Children Poverty and Social Injustice in Europe
