  2. Introduction • Why do we talk about poverty in the U.S? • What is the meaning of poverty? • What are the main effects of the poverty? • How can we help these people? And how to prevent them and their children from suffering?

  3. Poverty in U.S • What is Poverty? • it is the people who are poor or people with low incomes. • Does poverty effect the health? why? • Yes, because people with low income face • particular challenges to maintain their health.

  5. Relationship between food and health • Poor people try to work a lot of hours to make money so they do not have time to eat healthy food.

  8. Poverty and health. • Studies have firmly established that those with low incomes have lower health status than those with higher incomes. They are more likely than those with higher incomes to become ill, and to die at younger ages. They are also more likely to live in poor environmental situations with limited health care resources.

  9. Income Down, Poverty and Health Care costs up • families struggle to cover basic needs such as: food, shelter and the increasing cost of energy, health insurance often takes a back seat on the list of priorities. • About 1in 6 adults are without health Insurance.

  10. Do we have poverty in U.S? • Census Bureau shows that the number of American without health insurance rose to 46.3 Million in 2009 • It is higher than the 45.7 million in 2007

  12. The relationship between Education and Health • To study the relationship between the education and health using data which was analyzed by • the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS).

  13. The result of this study: 1- People who have higher levels of education are less likely to die within five years. 2- Four years of education lowers five year mortality by 1.8 percentage points.

The result of this study • 3- People who have higher levels of education are able to die from the most common acute and chronic diseases and anxiety or depression. • 4- More education reduces the risk of heart disease by 2.2 percentage points (relative to a base of percent). • 5-The risk of diabetes is less by 1.3 percentage points (relative to a base of 7 percent).

The result of this study • 6- Four more years of schooling lowers the probability of reporting being in fair or poor health by6 percentage points (the mean is 12 percent). • 7- Four more years of schooling reduces lost days of work to sickness by 2.3 days each year (relative to5.2 on average).

The result of this study • 8- With an additional four years of education also report more positive health behaviors. • 9- With an additional four years of education people are less likely to smoke (11percentage points relative to a mean of 23 percent). • 10- With an additional four years of education people are less likely to drink a lot (7 fewer days of 5 or more drinks in a year, among those who drink, from a base of 11).

The result of this study • 11- With an additional four years of education people are less likely to be overweight or obese (5percentage points lower obesity, compared to an average of 23 percent). • 12- With an additional four years of education people are less likely to use illegal drugs (0.6 percentage points less likely to use other illegal drugs, relative to an average of 5 percent).
