  1. Child poverty in Europe

  2. Social capital • The “red thread” during our discussions was social capital and we will in this presentation keep the focus on this aspect. • Social capital is related to social networks and is widely used to explain how communities function and how social organization depends on trust, norms and networks. • Bridging & Bounding

  3. Health, poverty & social capitalThe main target is to look at how the economic situation has an effect on social capital.

  4. Mental health • Parents with mental health problems. • Risk of children living in poverty to develop a poor mental health. • The economic situation in a poor family can create worries for the children. • Children who are socially excluded by their peers, because of the economic situation, this can lead to a lack of social capital.

  5. Psychical health • Children living in poor families have higher risks of experiencing problems with their psychical health. • Leisure and other sports activities can be hard to access for poor children when fees are impossible for them to pay. • Children who live in a low income family can have a bad diet.

  6. Disabilities • Children living with parents who have disabilities can be at risk of poverty. • Children who have disabilities and are poor are double stigmatized. • The society has not the facilities that disabled children need.

  7. Mental change and social marketing

  8. Mental change • Problem: • changing society • More support of the society • Less self sufficiency

  9. =>Need for a mental change • Awareness of responsability • Improve solidartiy • Social capital

  12. Minorities

  13. Minorities • -Our societies’ poor people – ways to address particular problems in different countries: universal vs. individual approach

  14. -Relation between poverty and minorities • -Causal link between all the phenomena that contribute to the degradation of a deprived group’s situation • -Importance of the role of social workers and social policy making • -Our goal – encourage bridging of cultures and points of vue to promote better interaction of our societies’ members

  15. e.g. Portugal • It has passed from a country of emigration to an immigration country: the entrance of people is superior to the exit. • Legal immigrant communities in Portugal: Brazilians, Ukrainians, Cabo Verdians and Angolans. • Portugal became a country of immigration and thus, the infrastructure developed around immigration and ethnic groups has not been as fertile as in other societies. e.g. Western.
