  1. Environment Questions Student Name: John Yang (Please press any key to continue…)

  2. 1 1. What are four suggestions for alternative fuel? • I have four suggestions for alternative fuel as following: • (1)From Natural Resource: “Natural Problem should be solved by natural resource”, therefore, Try to make use of natural resources for alternative fuel. For Kaohsiung for example, in places near sea shore we could use the power of tide, sea current, sea waves; as for other places, we could apply the energy from solar, or wind. • (2)Clean Fuel: Alternative fuel should be clean; that means they could not have any side effect. Just like petroleum would produce a lot of CO2, so it’s not a good energy. Solar Panel

  3. 1 1. What are four suggestions for alternative fuel? (cont.) • (3)Price Cheap: New fuel should be cheaper. I’ve read a paper talking about the hydrant-cell issues, which indicated that though H2 is clean and useful, it spend a lot to produce. Therefore, I think we should exclude such kinds of choices. • (4)Storage Method: torage method should be taken into concerned. As I know, the electricity that has been generated by the plant could hardly be saved, even if you don’t need to use so much. In other words, without good storage method, energies would just like the split water never come back any more. Wind Fan Solar Panel DayForNight Dress

  4. 2 2. What do you feel are the worst forms of pollutions? • Two kinds of pollutions, in my opinion are the worst forms • (1)Irreversible pollution: Some pollution, such as the radiation pollution from Chernobyl Nuclear power plant, which can’t be changed to original form and listed for a long period of time, is really terrible. Reports for Chernobyl Nuclear Accident Chernobyl Nuclear power plant

  5. 2 2. What do you feel are the worst forms of pollutions? (cont.) • Two kinds of pollutions, in my opinion are the worst forms • (2)Recyclable pollution: By the ecological cycling, some pollution, such as waste water with heavy metal ions, could make the fishes polluted. And after eating these fiches, many big fishes and birds are also polluted, and so on. Coral Reef was polluted by the waste water

  6. 3 3. Name four clean alternatives for power? • (1) Solar Power: We depend on sun everyday, so the Solar power is the most clean and best one. Following are the pro and con: • Advantage • Nature and Clean • Disadvantage • It depend on the weather. • The penal cost a lot of money.

  7. 3 3. Name four clean alternatives for power? (cont.) • (2) Tide Power: “Time and tide wait for no man”. Tide is the energy for the natural lunar power. Following are the pro and con: • Advantage • Nature and Clean • Disadvantage • There’re only twice a day, and only twice high ones every month. • It happens only on the sea coast, not all places available. • It takes a lot of formula to calculate the time.

  8. 3 3. Name four clean alternatives for power? (cont.) • (3) Wind Power: Wind is also the natural resource. Following are the pro and con: • Advantage • Nature and Clean • Disadvantage • It needs a lot of room, so we have to clean out a large place. • It might hurt the birds. • It depend the climate a lot. • Not all places available.

  9. 3 3. Name four clean alternatives for power? (cont.) • (4) Thermal Power: Inside the earth, the temperature is hot. It’s also a good resource of energy. Following are the pro and con: • Advantage • Nature and Clean • Disadvantage • It’s not so predictable. • Only some places could be available, such as places near volcano, hot spring .

  10. 4 4. What are the gases that are causing global warming? • I know 3 kind gases would do that: (after searching from the Wikipedia, and the pictures followed are from there, too) • CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), which causes about 9–26% of the total greenhouse effect.

  11. 4 4. What are the gases that are causing global warming? (cont.) • CH4 (Methane : a kind of marsh gas), which causes about 9–26% of the total greenhouse effect. • O3 (Ozone), which cause about 3–7% of the total greenhouse effect.

  12. 5 5. What is global warming and what are some of its results? • The global warming means that the average temperature of the earth are increasing, the so-called green house effect maybe the major reason. Besides that, following are some reasons just from my guess, which means that I’ve no data to support the guess. (1) Heavier transportation: Transportation makes us to consume more energy. And the more energy consumption, the more population. (2) Air conditioner using: We make use of air conditioner to cool inside, but that doesn’t mean the heat is eliminated, but means the heat is taken away to the outside. Beside the heat taken outside, the condenser also causes a lot of waste heat at the same time. Consequently, the temperature outside become extremely higher, which results in more air conditioner using. And finally it becomes a vicious circle.

  13. 5 5. What is global warming and what are some of its results? (cont.) (3) Luxury Living: After the industrialization, almost every rich people like to show off. Their house are huge, which might result in deforestation, their food are ambrosia, which could cause many rare species endanger, etc. I guess all these could lead to global warming. (4) War issues: Many politicians like to arise the war just because some stupid reasons. And these war, I guess, causes a lot of pollutions, too. For example, in some wars, a few old fields was destroyed, and was caused fire that needs at lest dozens of months to extinguish. That must result in a lot of unnecessary pollution, no mention to the global warming.

  14. 6 6. What is the green house effect? • Green house effect is one of the reasons for global warming. • After the industrialization, we produce a lot of air pollution. Among these air pollution, there’re some gases would keep the heat stayed in our earth’s atmosphere, just like a greenhouse can keep inside warm. • Such process is called greenhouse effect. 15. 7 7. What some major causes for deforestation? • Following are the reasons from my own opinion. That means I have no solid evident to prove them. (1)For more raw materials: Because of the new technology, many people live in high quality standard. Therefore, the consumption for raw materials, including metal, wood, jewelry, etc., is increasing. All these consumption might lead to deforestation. For example, many ladies like diamonds, but mining them takes a lot of space, including mining fields, worker dormitories, and processing factories. So, before mining, we must felled the woods first. (2)For money: Some countries are very poor. They just need to develop more for getting more money, but they have good ideas to do that. For example, Thailand used to want to develop the tourism, so they destroyed a natural forest closing to a beach for building villas and hotels. Although they could earn money from that, they did deforestation at the same time.

  16. 7 7. What some major causes for deforestation? (cont.) (3)For food: In some countries, people still used very traditional way to farm – that is the “Slash and Burn cultivation”. Actually just in 2006, some Indonesian farmers still used the Slash and Burn Cultivation, and that resulted in not only a big forest fire listing for couples of months, but also produced a huge air pollution. I think we should assist them to learn the nova agriculture, so that they could get more food as well as reduce the deforestation. (4)Stupid War again: War is also a major reason for deforestation. Take USA for example, just because testing the new nuclear weapon, they built many missile bases, and spared large room for testing field. Through doing that, not only many trees were killed, but the biology mutation there might also a big problem in the future. Slash and burn cultivation in Indonesia

  17. 8 8. Why are the consequences of deforestation so detrimental to the environment? • My opinions are following: (1) Air pollution: Just as the answer of question 7, the Indonesian Slash and Burn cultivation resulted in serious air pollution. During that time, even the airplane couldn’t fly just due to the “smog problem”. So, it’s very clear that deforestation would result in air pollution as the same time. (2) Less Photosynthesis: Without trees, the natural could not function the “Photosynthesis” well. In other words, the fewer trees, the fewer oxygen producing machines. Besides oxygen producing, photo-synthesis could also reduce the amount of CO2. So, deforestation means that we’re ruining the natural solution machines to the global worming problem. (3) Less animals: Without trees, the animals would be homeless, then they would die, then they could be extinct. Consequently, the natural balance would also out of order.

  18. 9 9. Approximately how many chopsticks are consumed every year? How many trees are cut down each year simply to make chopsticks? • I found the answers form the internet. (1)3 billion pairs per year in Taiwan: According to Liu Ming-long, the chairman of the Environmental Quality Protection Foundation (EQPF), said that Taiwan consumes about 3 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks every year. http://www.chinapost.com.tw/life/environment/2008/04/24/153402/Simple-life.htm (2)360thousand tress per year in Taiwan: According to Stephe Shen, the Director of Taipei City government’s Bureau of Environment Protection, there’re one thousand trees cut down to make the 2.8 million chopsticks used in Taiwan each day. 19. 10 10. What are consumables? What are some alternatives to some consumables? What are some alternatives to chopsticks? How could people who live in this culture be convinced to change from using chopsticks to using alternatives? • Following are my opinions for these questions: (1) Consumables are whatever we could eat, wear, write, or use, etc., including food, paper, pen, clothes, etc. And after we using them, these consumables might become the waste, or trash. (2) non-disposal chopsticks: I think that the non-disposal chopsticks are the best alternatives to disposal ones. And for some foreigners, maybe the silverwares are the alternative to chopsticks. (3) I have some suggestions for how to let people be convinced to use “non-disposal” dining tools. • Add the tax into the disposal ones: By doing that, people who want to save money would reduce using the disposal ones. • Find some celebrities to be the spokesman: Good policy really needs famous people to promote. • Let it became part of the education: Teachers should give the ides of environment concepts to the students from their childhood.
