HOW TO PREVENT A POWER OUTAGE
WHAT CAN CAUSE A POWER OUTAGE? WEATHER / TREES INCREASED ENERGY USAGE
TRIM SURROUNDING TREES One of the most common preventable power outage causes is overgrown trees that interfere with power lines. You can minimisethe risk of a blackout by monitoring the height of the trees around the perimeter of your building. If the tree is approaching the power lines you should contact your local energy provider or the local council. You should never try to trim the trees at your home or office on your own as it is highly dangerous and an appropriate task for trained professionals. If you have any questions or concerns about the trees near your building, you can contact Energy Safe Victoria for further advice.
REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION The reason a lot of residential blackouts occur during the cold season is the increased energy usage. The extra power used to keep homes warm often overwhelms the system in your area and causes the power to fail. You can reduce your energy consumption in your home or workplace by doing the following: • Switch off any tools/equipment/appliances that aren’t in use. • Turn off lights that aren’t in use/necessary. • Whilst you are using a heater , keep the doors shut to any rooms that aren’t being used. You can turn your heater off at night Keeping a heater on during the night can lead to many fire hazards). • Ensure your portable appliances are safe to use and not faulty using a PAT Test
TEST YOUR EQUIPMENT Faulty Equipment, exposed wires and out of date appliances can easily cause damage to your poerty and cause a blackout. A PAT (Portable Appliance Test) test is used to determine the safety of your electrical devices and appliances. By performing a PAT test on a device, you are ensuring the safety of those working with the device. Whether you are trying to fight the cold or beat the heat, making sure you cooling or heating devices are safe to use is highly necessary. Portable appliance testingis an important part of maintaining safety, whether it be in a business, home, school, or workshop.
TRIPPED SWITCHBOARD A tripped switchboard can be the ultimate reason why you neighbour'slights are on while you're in the dark Whilst this may be the source of the issue, handling your home or workplaces main switchboard could be hazardous to your well-being. That's why it is advised to routinely conduct a RCD Test. An RCD (residual current device) main purpose is to prevent severe electrical shocks from occurring. An RCD acts as a life-saving device; it detects and halts the power in an electrical socket preventing dangerous electric currents and fatal electric shocks. Electrocution is one of the most dangerous experiences a person can have in their lifetime. It can lead to serious consequences, and even death..
