  2. Project Goals • The main goal of the project will be to create a fully 3D model of Harkness Tower. • Additional goals will be to: • Identify and document the obstacles encountered during the reconstruction process. • Suggest new approaches to perform modifications to the model in the future.

  3. Photomodeler

  4. Benefits of Photomodeler • Easy to cross reference points across many photos • A good range of structures to mark photos with: • Points • Lines • Edges • Cylinders • Curves

  5. Camera Shortcomings • Camera problems: • Resolution • Blurriness • Orientation • Heterogeneity • In short, the photos are not good enough and the sources are too varied.

  6. Difficulties with Photomodeler • Camera issues: • Lots of intricate camera parameters • Situating the camera in its • original location.

  7. Difficulties (contd.) • The provided mark structures don’t apply very well to the tower’s detail: • For example: The structure here is a sort of pyramidal, pointed cylinder that tapers from the bottom to the top. But it also has spheres all around it.

  8. Solutions • Camera that provides more information (e.g. in EXIF format). • Accurately recording of all photograph locations. • Leave complicated objects to another program: • E.g. 3ds max. • Use higher resolutions. • Use same camera.

  9. Strategies • Model basic tower structure using the scanner • Use photomodeler for parts where the scanner has no access. • Don’t use photomodeler where there isn’t enough resolution. • Use separate 3d modeling application for objects with excessive detail. • Sacrifice some texturing information • Gain better geometry

  10. What’s next? • Switch to a high-quality camera • With a portable tripod • Start scanning the tower’s with the Cyra device. • Make sure that all the data collected is in a compatible format. • 3ds max • Photomodeler • Cyra scanner
