  1. From One From One From One Generation Generation Generation To Another To Another To Another “Generational Issues” Among The Lord’s People

  2. The “Joshua Generation” • Joshua was a lot like Moses • Strong moral character • Open, unchanging commitment to God • He did not fear Josh 24:14-15 • This generation knew God because of their experiences (Egypt, the Red Sea, wilderness)

  3. The “Joshua Generation” • This generation knew struggles Deut 8:1-6 • ThoughtÙ why did God “strip them bare” and make them so vulnerable in their travels? • He wanted to see if they trusted Him enough • They learned to trust God completely…there was no other way for them to survive

  4. The “Joshua Generation” • This generation knew the value of God’s gift… their inheritance • They knew how to fight & battle for the Lord • Their inheritance was not handed to them “on a silver platter” Josh 6 cp. Heb 11:30 Rom 10:17 • They knew the cost of obtaining God’s promise

  5. The “Joshua Generation” • They were a “primitive group” out of Egypt • They were shepherds cp. Gen 46:32 • They were not prepared for war Ex 13:17 • They did not possess “superior technologies” to battle their enemies Josh 17:14-16, 18 • They knew the battle was God’s Josh 24:11-12

  6. The “Joshua Generation” • All these experiences and attributes molded and shaped their character and their faith • It made them who they were…it caused them to think the way they did Judg 2:7

  7. The “Post-Joshua Generation” • No personal experience of all that God had done for Israel in the past • No personal knowledge of previous struggles to obtain God’s blessings • They trusted in themselves, their own power to achieve Deut 8:7-17 [Not their fault] [Not their fault] [Their fault]

  8. The “Post-Joshua Generation” • They were just as accountable to God as was the “Joshua Generation” • They were just as obligated to serve God • Their struggles would be different • They were to remain the faithful nation…the ones that would eventually produce the Messiah

  9. The “Post-Joshua Generation” • Yet, it was still said of them… “They did not know the Lord…” Judg 2:10 • They eventually resorted to the worship of idols Judg 2:11-13

  10. Present-Day Generations • The previous comparisons are more than just an interesting history lesson • It also serves as a warning for our own “Generational Issues” today • Today, a “difference of generations” exists in the Lord’s church

  11. Eastside Age Statistics • as of 01/15/08 • by count from directory Age Group Percentage } 25 & Below 30 % 62 % 26 - 50 32 % 51 & Above 38 %

  12. Present-Day Generations • One generation has lived through, participated in “defining struggles” & divisive times • Premillennialism, Institutionalism, the instrument • The present purity of the church is due, in large part, to past warriors who defended truth • We benefit from their tireless efforts

  13. Present-Day Generations • Another generation knows nothing about these conflicts…other than what the older generation tells them (orally, in writing) • Future gospel preachers, elders, other leaders will arise from this generation • They will face their own issues, struggles HOW??

  14. Conclusion • Faithfulness to God is not “generational” • It doesn’t matter the issues or the generation in which they come about • One can always be faithful to God • Future generations will not go through the issues & struggles we go through today

  15. Conclusion • How we can ensure the Lord’s will is done from “One Generation To Another?” • TEACHING is the answer • By parents Deut 6:4-9 Eph 6:4 • Maybe the “Joshua Generation” failed here • By local churches Eph 4:11-13

  16. Conclusion • How we can ensure the Lord’s will is done from “One Generation To Another?” • FAITHFULNESS is the answer Titus 2:10-14 • Present & future generations must not fail here

  17. Conclusion • There will always be divisive struggles for any generation Mt 18:7 1 Cor 11:19 1 Tim 4:1 • The questions that remain… • How will your generation respond? • How will you leave the Lord’s kingdom for the next generation?
