  1. Collection Service

  2. Collection • A set of documents • A set of services on the documents • A set of polices that regulate the use of the services CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  3. Why a dynamic collection functionality? The Cyclades data environment will be huge and heterogeneous The dynamic collection functionality will provide • a user view of the data environment as organised into community meaningful information spaces accessible throught specific set of services CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  4. Collection names Collection descriptions Computer Science documents in “computer science” domain Recent Physics documents in “physics” domain stored in ArXiv and PhysNet, published after 1990 ……. ……. User View CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  5. Collection names Operations Computer Science simple-search, … European Computer Science attribute-based search, cross-language search, … User view simple-search Input: “keywords in the abstract” Preconditions: keywords in English Output:set of <document.id,author, title> Effect:”returns the specified output for all the documents that contains the given keywords in their abstract” CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  6. Why a dynamic collection functionality? The dynamic collection mechanism will provide • a support for the optimisation of the services CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  7. Create.coll(criterion) List.collections Get.collection.description (coll.name) Remove.coll(coll.name) Architecture Collection Server CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  8. List of available collections • For each collection: • name, subject, description, signature and effect of services, access polices Collection server • List of metadata repositories, indexes,… and their address • For each metadata repository: • Subject, percentage accessible digital documents, language, ….. • Mapping between metadata repositories and indexes • Search, Browse specifications • …. Collection descriptive metadata Relation between collection and system descriptive metadata System descriptive metadata CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  9. Dynamic creation • Admissible criteria • Those documents and those services that are relevant for the new identified community CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  10. Dynamic creation • Admissible criteria - initial assumption dd /(C1, C2, …,Cn)P(d) Composition Selection of existing collections Restriction on the document metadata fields CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  11. “system driven” criterion formulation • The user interface presents the possible options and their description • List of available collections and their description • Composition operators • Indexed metadata fields for the documents that belong to the chosen composition • Services and polices are automatically derived CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  12. Time 0 options • List of available collections Cyclades selected archives • Description of each collection Derived by the answers to the OAI protocol requests + …..? • Restriction fields DC + indexed fields of parallel metadata formats • Services Cyclades services on the selected documents CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  13. This is the end of the story CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  14. Create collection • Criterion specification: • Selection of existing collections • Composition of existing collections • Restriction CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  15. Abstract collection metadata • Polices description • ???? CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  16. The collection criteria • Selection of one or more existing collections • “Technical reports” • Composition of existing collections • “Health” and “Information technology” • Restriction • “Tecnical reports” on medicine, written in Italian, and available in downloadable digital form • “Theses and dissertations” produced by students at Virgina Tech CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  17. Other collection criteria • plus others…. CYCLADES Kick-off meeting

  18. Implementable criterion The given collection specification (criterion) must be implementable • Selection must operate on existing collections • (which can be mapped into …. • Restriction must specify condition that can be evaluated on the collection/collection composition e.g. Theses of the “Virginia Tech collection” • Set of services/polices must be defined on the set of collection documents e.g.Search by author last name CYCLADES Kick-off meeting
