  1. Outer Tracker Module Production at NIKHEF • Produced 60 modules • Production Progress • Quality Assurance Half way! OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  2. Module Production at NIKHEF Courtesy of Jan Spelt OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  3. 50% Milestone met 04/2004: EDR (Electronics Design Review) 05/2004: PRR (Production Readiness Review) 15/05/2003: EDR (Engineering Design Review) 03/2005: 50% prod. 02/2004: 10% prod. 12/2005: 100% prod OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  4. Module Production at NIKHEF (1) Poor man’s logbook OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  5. Module Production at NIKHEF (2) Poor man’s logbook OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  6. Module Production at NIKHEF (3) • Production process: some minor problems: • Watch glue on connectors • Module 58: 4 broken wires • Module 59: peculiar wire response OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  7. Glue on Connector (1) Traces of glue. Affects leakage current for wires 1 and 64 (~20-100nA) OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  8. Glue on Connector (2) • Discovered on Heidelberg modules 21 and 22 • 8 channels with high currents (10 – 270 nA) • Checked at NIKHEF: found 6 wires • 64L: M16A M19A M26A • 1L: M20A M26A M41B • Investigated influence of humidity on M16 and M19: • measure current after production; • measure current after drying; • put module in cold, wet environment (= outside); • measure current; • scratch of glue; • measure current. Traces of glue. Affects leakage current for wires 1 and 64 (~20-100nA) OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  9. Broken wires in Mod 58 • Discovered 4 broken wires in Mod 58 • History: • 23 FebWired full panel • 24 Feb50U broken • 01 Mar60U broken, just before gluing module • 04 Mar 56U short circuit • 07 Mar55U short circuit after shaking the module • Hypothesis: • Middle print tilted ? ? OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  10. We foresee 10% spares Which ones would we select as spares? How many bad channels are we left with? Selection of 10% spares OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  11. Quality Criteria Number of bad wires from 90Sr scan. Define bad: • Low response: <15% on average • Typically disconnected due to tripping HV supply • High response: >15% on average • Typically noisy • High response: >100% at any place on the wire • Spikes • Self-sustained currents • Missing wire locators • Not used in quality criteria now: • HV in air : correlated to the 90Sr numbers • HV training : correlated to the 90Sr numbers • Wire Tension: OK. • Ignore modules 5012 and 0… • Consider only modules 1-60 OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  12. Module Data (1) OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  13. Module Data (2) OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  14. Module 60 about to be scanned… Just found peculiar wire in Mod 59: Low current, then self-sustained current Being investigated Module Data (3) Wire locator position  Current 90Sr source Position OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  15. Module Selection Selection of 6 worst modules: OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  16. The worst modules from the rest… • Probably module 16, 26 or 30: OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  17. Special Tests see Peter • Weighing all panel and module components • Calculate X/X0 • Survey of module flatness • Requirement: dZ < +/- 500 um • Result: dZ < +/- 400 um • Humidity of modules • Compare in-leak between leaky and gas-tight module •  Confirm gas-tightness requirements LHCb 2004-114 LHCb 2005-009 in preparation OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  18. Summary • Production: • Only minor changes in production process • Satisfactory production speed • Wire quality very good now • Gas tightness OK, with occasional leaky exceptions • 17 bad channels in best 90% of the modules = 1.2 ‰ • 11 bad channels in best 85% of the modules= 0.8 ‰ OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning

  19. References • LHCb week September 2004, Chia • Scan of 4 Warsaw modules • NIKHEF – Results Mod 0-10 • LHCb week December 2004, CERN • NIKHEF - Module glueing, Connector soldering • OT meeting February 2005, Warsaw • NIKHEF - Module selection 1-50 All quality plots for each module can be found here: http://www.nikhef.nl/pub/experiments/bfys/lhcb/outerTracker/QualityPlots/ OT Meeting - LHCb week - Production and QA , Niels Tuning
