  1. Unit : 2 Week:5 Theme: Sled dogs as heroes. STORY: THE GREAT SERUM RACE

  2. Genre • Nonfiction • Nonfiction is a detailed account of real people or situations using verifiable facts.

  3. Strategy • Summarize- Summarizing helps you identify what a selection is about, remember to select the most important ideas, and restate them in your own words.

  4. Skill • Sequence of Events- Remember to look for clue words and phrases to understand the chronological order of events and organize your summaries.

  5. Unbearable (adj.) • That which cannot be endured or tolerated • Trying not to cry was almost unbearable while looking at the peas. Blah!!!

  6. Rendezvous (noun) To meet at a fix place or time The rendezvous point for the members of the sewing club was set for the local café.

  7. PEDESTRIAN (noun) • A person who travels on foot; walkers. • The pedestrian walked 10 miles within an hour!

  8. outskirts (noun) The regions or sections surrounding, or at the edge of an area , as in a city. We discovered a beautiful pond on the outskirts of town.

  9. intercept (verb) • To stop on the way, to stop the course or progress of. The defensive back managed to intercept the quarterback’s pass

  10. Quarantine (verb) • The isolation of persons , animals, ships, or goods exposed to infectious disease, to prevent the spread of the disease. • The doctors put the family under quarantine, when influenza broke out.

  11. epidemic (noun) The rapid spread of a disease among people at the same time. The elementary school experienced an epidemic of chicken pox.

  12. Plight (adj.) A bad situation or condition. The drought created a terrible plight for farmers.

  13. Story Words • caribou- any of a group of large deer that live in the northern regions of the world • antitoxin- an antibody, or protein, formed in the body that provides protection against a specific poison • diphtheria- a serious bacterial disease that is highly contagious, characterized by high fever and difficulty in breathing • malamutes- wolf-like dogs of a breed native to northwestern Alaska having a thick, coarse coat • mukluks- sealskin or reindeer-skin boot worn by the Inuit
