  5. Populism • A political philosophy supporting “the people” in their struggle against the privileged elite. • Ex: Occupy Wall Street  “the common people” protesting against the greed of the rich 1% • Romanticizing the “common people” or “middle class” as hardworking/down to earth

  6. flexible political platforms  whatever “the people want” • Ex: president giving free bread in public markets, lowering price of gas • Everyone loves lower gas prices, but that doesn’t solve any problems. • Is Mr. Chen a populist or anti-populist?

  7. Is Populism a Positive or Negative Concept? • Set up the following chart on TWO full pages in your notebook: 1. Cut out and glue the quotations in your notebooks. 2. BRIEFLY explain why quote is populist or anti-populist.

The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who want to do the controlling. • What is this quote saying? • Does this quote support or oppose the idea of populism?

  9. Classwork: Blueprint of a Latifundio (10 points) • Draw a floor plan of the entire latifundio: It should AT minimum include… • The Big House • workers’ quarters • farm / pasture land Explain FIVE details from your floor plan. See my example from the next page.

  11. Homework: Populist Speech(Due Friday 10.12) • Pretend you are either Mitt Romney or Barack Obama running in the 2012 presidential campaign. Write a short speech that demonstrates populism and will help you win the election. In your speech, include FIVE examples of populism/ patronage networks. Underline these examples. Ex: I promise as president to make sure every single American is able to afford going to college- education should not be just for the rich, but for ALL Americans.

  12. SOCIAL EFFECTS What is the effect of a patronage network? Does it hurt/help society? In what way? • disenfranchisement (90% don’t own land  can’t vote) • lack of social mobility (poor ALWAYS remain poor  difficult to obtain wealth w/o land) • polarized society (rich get richer; poor get poorer) • corruption (society based on WHO you know, not WHAT you know)
