  4. Find journal articles with known citation Sample article: Baird, M. 2004, ‘Orientations to paid maternity leave: understanding the Australian debate’, Journal of Industrial Relations, vol. 46, no. 3, pp. 259-273. • To find the full text of the above journal article, you can try: • CrossSearch (default search box on library homepage) • Library Catalogue

  5. Find journal articles with known citation – using CrossSearch Enter part of your article title and enclose it in double quotation marks. This instructs CrossSearch to search for it as a phrase. Sample search on CrossSearch: • If full text is available, a Full Text Online link will show. Click to link through to full text. • If article’s abstract is available (but not full text), a Citation link will show. To find full text, try searching the library catalogue (by journal title).

  6. Find journal articles with known citation – using the Library Catalogue (1) Library Catalogue: http://opac.library.usyd.edu.au/ Click on the Journal tab and enter the journal title (NOT article title).

  7. Find journal article with known citation - using the Library Catalogue(2) If the Library holds the journal, a catalogue record will display. Print version of journal. Clicking on the journal title reveals that the Library’s print holdings are from 1959-2003. As our required article was published in 2004, you won’t find the full text here. Online version of journal. Clicking on the journal title reveals that the Library’s online holdings are from 1994 to present. You’ll be able to find the required article (published in 2004) here.

  8. Find journal articles with known citation- using the Library Catalogue (3) Library catalogue record for online version of journal. Click on this link to access the journal article published in 2004.

  9. Find journal articles with known citation- using the Library Catalogue (4) After being linked through to the online journal, use the rest of your article’s citation details to drill down to the full text.

  10. Find a chapter from an edited book (1) Sample chapter from an edited book: Chapman, A. 2005, 'Challenging the constitution of the (white and straight) family in work and family scholarship', in J. Murray (ed.), Work, Family and the Law, Federation Press, Sydney, pp. 65-87. To locate this chapter, search by book title (NOT chapter title) on the library catalogue.

  11. Find a chapter from an edited book (2) Library Catalogue http://opac.library.usyd.edu.au/ Search by book title (NOT chapter title).

  12. Find journal articles on a topic – usingLibrary Databases (1) Sample topic: What type of employment relations strategies have low cost airlines used to date? Create a search strategy: Identify key concepts in topic. Think of alternative words for key concepts (synonyms). Connect key concepts and alternative words using the operators AND and OR.

  13. Find journal articles on a topic – usingLibrary Databases (2) • Finding scholarly journal articles • To find scholarly, journal articles, you need to use the Library’s databases. These provide you with quality sources, appropriate for academic study. • Why Google won’t help… • No quality control – anyone can publish on the Web. • Information may be outdated or bias. • You may be prompted for payment $$$ if trying to access a journal article directly from Google. • Library databases allow you to access journal articles for FREE – the Library has already paid for them.

  14. Find journal articles on a topic – usingLibrary Databases (3) • Go to the Library’s database page: http://www.library.usyd.edu.au/databases/ • Useful databases for Work & Organisational Studies: • ABI/INFORM • Business Source Premier • Emerald Full Text • Sage Journals Online • ScienceDirect • The databases are arranged alphabetically under “Databases by Title”. To access, click on the relevant letter, e.g. “A”for ABI/INFORM. • To find other relevant databases, click on the “Work and Organisational Studies” link under “Databases by Subject”.

  15. Find journal articles on a topic – using Library Databases (4) Sample search on ABI/INFORM database Put double quotation marks around words you want to search for as a phrase. Combine key concepts with ANDoperator. This instructs database to find sources containing keywords from both your rows, e.g. “low cost airlines” AND “employment relations” Combine closely related terms with OR operator. This instructs database to find sources containing any of the terms (e.g. “low cost airlines” OR “budget airlines” OR “no frills airlines”). In this example, database will find sources containing any of the terms in your first row AND any of the terms in your second row. Limit to peer-reviewed, scholarly articles.

  16. Find journal articles on a topic – using Library Databases (5) Distinguishing between scholarly and non-scholarly articles • During your database searches, you may find articles from different publication types (e.g. scholarly journals, trade publications, newspapers, magazines). • If you are unsure what type of publication your article comes from, a useful source to check is: Ulrich’s International Periodicals Directory (access via Library’s Databases page – click on “U” listing under Databases by Title).

  17. Find books - using the Library Catalogue (1) Sample keyword search on Library Catalogue: No need to put AND operator between keywords as catalogue assumes it is present. In this example, catalogue will find resources containing all three keywords, i.e. guide AND evaluating AND research.

  18. Find books – using the Library Catalogue (2) If book is on loan, you can recall it. This shortens the book’s loan period (to a week) for the current borrower. If book is on loan or not held by the Library, try Bonus. This lets you request the book from another university library. Bonus books often arrive faster than recalled books so try Bonus first.

  19. Library - additional resources & services (1) • MyLoans account Check due dates, renew books, request Storage articles. • Bonus If the book you want is on loan or not held by our Library, try this service. It lets you get a copy of the book from another university library. • Study room bookings Can book up to 1 week ahead. • Fisher 24/7 – study space Swipe in with your current student card.

  20. Library - additional resources & services(2) • EndNote Referencing software to help you create and manage your references.
