  1. The Heart Using the diagram on page 97 of your work book, label the diagram to the best of your ability.

  2. The Internal Anatomy of the Heart Aorta Superior vena cava Left pulmonary artery Right pulmonary artery Left pulmonary veins Aortic semilunar valve Right pulmonary veins Left atrium Pulmonary semilunar valve Bicuspid (mitral) valve Left ventricle Right atrium Interventricular septum Chordaetendinae Papillary muscles Tricuspid valve Chordaetendinae Right ventricle Papillary muscles Inferior vena cava Thoracic aorta (descending)

  3. Cardiovascular and Respiratory System • Function – to provide a constant supply of oxygen to the body. • 1) Cardiovascular System • Components: • Heart, blood vessels & blood , lungs

  4. Function • Deliver oxygen, fuel and nutrients to remove wastes • Maintain body temperature • Prevent infection

  5. Blood • Characteristics • Made up of plasma and cells • Plasma = fluid, mostly water, 55% of blood, disolved substances (nutrients, proteins, ions and gases) • Cells = 45% of blood

  6. Types • Red blood cells (erythrocyts) contain hemoglobin, transport oxygen and deliver oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. • What is hemoglobin? • a protein, found in red blood cells, that is responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to all other tissues of the body.

  7. Types • White blood cells – (leukocytes) less than 1% of blood, involved in immune function. • C) Platelets – framents of cells, regulate blood clotting.

  8. The Vascular System and Blood • Vascular System: • A network of vessels that transport blood throughout the body; vessels divided into four main categories: • Arteries: carry blood away from the heart to different organs • Arterioles: regulate blood distribution to various tissues of the body • Capillaries: responsible for the exchange of gases and nutrients with the tissues • Veins (venules): return blood to the heart

  9. Capillaries • Smallest vessels • One cell thick • Site for gas exchange – this is where the transfer of gases and nutrients from the blood to the tissue occurs. • Oxygen concentration is high when it arrives to the capillaries • However, there is less oxygen in the tissue and diffusion occurs where needed.

  10. Summary of the Vascular System Large veins Large arteries Medium veins Medium arteries Arteriole Venules Capillaries Precapillary sphincters Capillary bed

  11. Circulatory System Blood Flow • Complete the worksheet write in blue to represent deoxygenated blood • Write in write the words that represent oxygenated.

  12. Circulatory System Blood Flow • FROM BODY • Superior and inferior Vena Cave • Right Atrium • Tricuspid Valve • Right Ventricle • Pulmonary Valve • Pulmonary Artery • Lungs

  13. Circulatory Blood Flow • Pulmonary Veins • Left Atrium • Mitral Valve • Left Ventricle • Aortic Valve • Aorta • TO BODY!
