  2. What is the Motorsport Safety Development Fund (MSSDF)? • Mercedes McLaren - Ferrari case 2007 • FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) proposed creation of MSSDF for the benefit of global motorsport safety • Sum of $60 million donated to the FIA Foundation as a “designated” fund

  3. What is the Motorsport Safety Development Fund (MSSDF)? • Fund will be administered by the FIA Foundation from its secretariat in London, with the programme assessment and implementation carried out by the FIA Institute for Motor Sport Safety in Paris

  4. Decision making within the MSSDF • WMSC and FIA Foundation Board of Trustees approved Management Committee • Michael Schumacher (FIA Foundation trustee) • Max Mosley (FIA Foundation trustee) • Nick Craw (representing ASNs) • Jean Todt (representing Ferrari) • Norbert Haug (representing Mercedes)

  6. Programme Areas • Three programme areas • Facility Safety Improvement Consultancy Programme • Officials’ Skills Safety Training Programme • Young Driver Safety Scholarship Programme Criteria for each programme area which applications must fulfil

  7. Facility Safety Improvement Consultancy Programme

  8. Facility Safety Improvement Consultancy Programme (FSICP) • Development of viable motor sport venues (with good level of spectator and competitor safety) is essential for many nations • Grant support to use consultancy services for ASNs that are in the process of establishing/upgrading motor sport facilities

  9. Facility Safety Improvement Consultancy Programme (FSICP) • Ensure appropriate safety standards are in place and that venues are also used to promote safety training • Scope to support ‘dual use’ facilities that cater both for motor sport and also for road driver safety training

  10. Officials’ Skills Safety Training Programme

Officials’ Skills Safety Training Programme (OSSTP) • Grants awarded to officials from ASNs to upgrade skills in organisational functions relevant to safety at motor sport events • Examples of grants • Cost of participation in training programmes offered by other experienced ASNs • Cost of participation in the safety-related training programmes being developed by the FIA Institute for Motor Sport Safety

  12. Young Driver Safety Scholarship Programme

Young Driver Safety Scholarship Programme (YDSSP) • Scholarship programme linked to new FIA Young Drivers of the Year awards scheme • Details of scheme will be circulated to ASNs following WMSC approval • Scheme will recognise exceptional performance from 15-20 year old age group in national competitions • Drivers nominated by ASNs to the FIA

Young Driver Safety Scholarship Programme (YDSSP) • Nominations considered by FIA Expert Panel • Scholarship grants awarded to Young Drivers of the Year to support understanding of safety issues in motor sport and on the road • Scholarship consists of special course in injury prevention and safety management. Special emphasis on safety role model young racing drivers should adopt in their motor sport career

  15. How to apply • Applications should be made by ASNs • Ensure project proposal meets all the necessary criteria • Contact Jane Pearce by email with short description of the proposal in English and an indication of the funding required

  16. How to apply • Proposal reviewed by MSSDF secretariat and, if appropriate, application form will be sent to ASN for completion • First set of applications has already been considered by the Management Committee • Deadlines for second set of applications will be communicated in due course • Regionally-based proposals involving a number of ASNs co-operating with each other are particularly welcome
