  1. Welcome Peter Wilkinson University of Manchester Chairman SKADS Board SKADS Workshop 2006

  2. History • First meeting in December 2002 • Proposal to EC in March 2004; • Institutes in 4 non-EC countries involved: Canada, Russia, South Africa, Australia • EC funds €10.44M; national funds add €28M • Formal start of project July 2005 • Some national contributions (e.g. UK) just starting • Project now fully underway 3.5 years after conception! Exercise in pan-national team building! SKADS Workshop 2006

  3. Scope • Coherent programme: panoramic view across whole SKA project • Science and system architecture simulations • Development of generic hardware sub-systems • Building technical demonstrator systems • Focussing on the application of Aperture Arrays • Final deliverable is a “costed SKA design” SKADS Workshop 2006

  4. Strategies • SKADS is not an all-encompassing study • Europe unlikely to build the full SKA ! SKADS must be closely linked with the international project • Working within the ISPO WG structure • science, simulations, engineering and costing • Interactions with science demonstrators SKADS Workshop 2006

  5. Strategies Outcomes from 2nd Board Meeting: • “SKADS Benchmark Design” • AAs (low frequencies) plus 6m dishes (high frequencies) in synthesis arrays (Establish requirements for AA plus low-risk dish option) • Simulations in parallel with those for the International Reference Design SKADS Workshop 2006

  6. Strategies Outcomes from 2nd Board Meeting: • Focal Plane Phased Arrays • No explicit development within SKADS • FPA work in Australia/Canada/Netherlands/South Africa will be available to SKADS and used in simulations (potential for FPA work in RadioNet FP7 in 2008; following on from “PHAROS” in RadioNet FP6) SKADS Workshop 2006

  7. Strategies Outcomes from 2nd Board Meeting: • International R&D work on dishes • incorporated into the SKADS final report and costing. • SKADS Final Report: • costing for the entire international SKA design as it stands at the end of SKADS • needed to give all funders the international picture SKADS Workshop 2006

  8. Summary • SKADS is fully up and running • It is outward looking • It is a great SKA enabler • It can lead into FP7 Preparatory Studies.... • Now the more detailed picture… SKADS Workshop 2006
