  1. Columbian Exchange Debate

  2. Columbian Exchange Debate • Students will use the documents provided (or other sources) to answer the following question: “Did the Columbian Exchange have a more positive or negative impact on the Americas, Europe, and Africa?” • Students will create a T-chart to organize their research. One side will address negative impacts and the other will have positive impacts. Please write in COMPLETE SENTENCES and have 20 total impacts. • I recommend that students be able to recognize whether each impact is a social/cultural, economic, political, or demographic (human population) change. • Students should read at least 3 of the articles provided in order to get a strong understanding of the Columbian Exchange.

  3. Prepare for Debate: 1. Check your T-Chart now. Make sure your name is on it and that it has each of your statements is NUMBERED (#1-20). Turn in your T-chart to my desk. 2. Read the article provided and take notes on anything that will enhance your arguments in the debate. 3. I need 4 volunteers with 100% on notes. 2 will be the moderators and 2 will be the scribe. (NOTE: The moderator will call on students to speak and will keep a speakers list.  The scribe will take notes summarizing what each student says.  Both of them get automatic participation points for the debate.) 4. Each student is expected to participate (speak) at least once with something unique and valuable in order to get 15 debate participation points.  This will count as your first QUIZ score.

  4. Debate (Civil Discourse) Guidelines: 1. Once the debate begins, the moderator will go back and forth from side to side allowing people to speak. This is a bit more of a discussion than a debate, so you can piggyback off of what someone else said, but please be considerate, wise, and timely. 2. During the debate, I ask that you be respectful and not interrupt a speaker. Please raise your hand to get on the moderator’s speakers list if you want to rebut what a speaker has said or to introduce a new argument. 3. I will let you know when there are a few minutes left. Those who haven't spoken, need to speak if they want the participation points for the quiz. 4. Once the debate is concluded, I will ask each side to address what the other side SHOULD have argued but never did. (This also counts as participation points.) 5. Once we debrief, students will be expected to write an essay that covers their final thoughts on the Columbian Exchange and its social, political and economic impact on both the old (Europe, Africa) and new (Americas) worlds.
