Stress – Have you got it? • Any of these symptoms? • Sick • Dizziness • Indigestion • Loss of concentration • On edge • Irritable • Over sensitive to criticism • Chest or stomach pains • Excessive sweating • Crying regularly or feeling sad • Restlessness – cannot settle • Loss of appetite • Can’t wake up • Can’t get to sleep

Stress – What is it? • Is a feeling • Reaction to events – called ‘stressors’ • Activate the nervous system and specific hormones • Good stress • Heart rate speeds up, along with breathing rate and metabolism • Adrenal glands will produce adrenaline and cortisol • Arteries open up • Liver releases glucose • Sweat produced to cool the body

Good Stress vs Bad Stress • Good stress can enhance performance • Taking a penalty or sitting an exam • Nervous system quickly returns to its usual state • BUT - Bad Stress occurs when the system does not reset itself or return to normal • Why? • Being bullied • Exposed to violence or injury • Relationship anxieties or family conflicts • Ongoing problems with schoolwork • Being too busy, always on the go – no time to relax

  9. Avoidance of Stress – Tip 1 • Sleep • Regular routine • Challenges • Power naps • Adolescent hours vs. school hours • Weekends • Hours of sleep needed – different for different people

  10. Avoidance of Stress – Tip 2 • Relax • Relaxation response is the body’s natural antidote to stress • Relaxing activities: • Reading a book • Having a bath • Breathing exercises • Yoga • Hobby • Avoidance of stressful activities: • Failure or perceived failure • Lateness • Lack of preparation

  11. Avoidance of Stress – Tip 3 • Planning and preparation of a work schedule • Plan what you are doing and plan it in advance • Not all about work • Take a break • Don’t procrastinate – some bits will be hard work • Realistic • Medium term plan • Short term plan

  12. Avoidance of Stress – Tip 4 • Eating • It is important • Beware eating on the run • Working whilst you eat? • Build it into your timetable • Stress means that vitamins and minerals are needed more than ever • Beware coffee, tea, Red bull, alcohol, tobacco, other drugs

  13. Avoidance of Stress – Tip 5 • Get some exercise • Stress buster – running, playing sport, skateboarding, walking • Good for self confidence • Something upon which you have to concentrate and therefore clears your mind of worries • Improve your mood • Change your PoV

  14. Avoidance of Stress – Tip 6 • Being positive • Don’t beat yourself up • Best you can be – no more • Who makes you feel good • Do not surround yourself with critical people • Do some people judge you
