  1. Summary of NCSX Modular Coil Mechanical Test Program I. Zatz & J. Chrzanowski July 2, 2003

  2. Test Program at CTD incorporates the following tests: For a single modular conductor coil (at multiple temperatures): • Tension tests • Compression tests • Flexural tests • Thermal expansion For a 2x2 modular coil bundle: • Shear tests • Flexural tests VPI shrinkage evaluation

  3. Tests completed to date: • Single modular coil compression tests • Single modular coil flexural tests • VPI shrinkage evaluation In progress: • Single modular coil tension tests

  4. Results (to date): Single modular coil compression tests: Insulation materials dominate behavior. Strength ≈ 25 ksi @ R.T. Strength 40 ksi min. @ temps ≤ 150K Modulus data erratic Failure mode either insulation split or unwrap

  5. Results (to date): Single modular coil flexural tests: Both copper and insulation affect behavior Both flexural directions tested Strength 27 ksi min. @ R.T. Strength 38 ksi min. @ temps ≤ 150K Modulus data consistent Failure mode: Shear at insulation/kapton interface Observation: More pronounced cracking at cryo temperatures
