  3. Separable prefix verbs a.k.a. OREO verbs

  4. What is a prefix? • A letter or group of letters attached to the beginning of a word that partly indicates its meaning. Common prefixes include anti- (against), co- (with), mis- (wrong, bad), and trans- (across).

  5. What is a root or stem of a word? • A word or word element from which other words grow, usually through the addition of prefixes and suffixes.

  7. More about “aussehen” • It is a separable prefix verb • Also known as an “oreo verb” • It means “to look” (as in appearance) • The prefix is aus • You must separate“aus” from the root word “sehen” • “aus” goes to the end of the sentence or question • When you conjugate “sehen” you need to change the stem of du, er/sie to “ie” • Example: Ersiehtattraktivaus.

  8. What words, in German, can describe the looks of something or someone? attraktiv, schön, hässlich, hübsch alt, jung gut, schlecht gesund, krank gross, klein, lang, kurz dick, vollschlank, schlank hell, dunkel blond, brünett, rotharrig hat eine/keineBrilleblaueAugen lockige/glatteHaare

  11. Why do they call it an “oreo” verb?

  12. "One of the most important decisions you must make is how to eat your Oreo cookies. Some people, especially those who are conservative and traditional, just bite into the Oreo without separating the chocolate wafer from the icing. Others, especially the chocolate lovers, twist the cookie apart and eat the filling first before they savor the chocolate wafer. Still others, the real risk takers, eat the wafer off of the carefully balancing the white fluff between their fingers until the wafer is gone and the filling is a light airy dessert."

  13. Well….natürlich….the only right way is the “aussehen” way.

  14. Let me explain….. • First, • You separate the top from the cream and bottom wafer. Twist, if needed. • Be careful…. sometimes you have to add a little twist to get it right and not ruin the middle. • Save the piece you pull off for last.

  15. With aussehen….FIRST • You separate the prefix from the rest of the verb aus + sehen. • Be careful….sometimes you have to add a little twist to get it right and not ruin the middle. • The twist in German? Sometimes when you conjugate it, you have to change “e” to “ie” in the verb “sehen. • ” Du, er/sie ….make ie • Ichsehe • du sIEhst • er and siesIEht • wirsehen • ihrseht • sie and Siesehen • Save the “aus” for last.

  16. GO AHEAD • Separate your cookie! • Now, show your partner, which part of your oreo represents aus, and which part represents sehen and the rest of your sentence or question. Sehen + rest of sentence or question aus

  17. Then • Write your sentence or question. • Don’t forget….the “good stuff” is in the middle…..the main sentence or question and details. • Make sure that the middle part looks good • BUT……WAIT!!!!!

  18. Don’t forget….. • Fix the middle of your cookie, now that the parts are separated, make sure the cream ….the good stuff….is all in order and looks nice….double check for no flaws, no errors, no mistakes • Check your spelling, word order, and verb conjugation

  19. GO AHEAD • Fix the middle of your cookie, now that the parts are separated, make sure the cream ….the good stuff….is all in order and looks nice….double check for no flaws • After you are sure the middle section looks good….yes…you may eat it….just the crème and wafer piece…the “meat” or main part of your sentence or question

  20. VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER!!! • You still have the top wafer from the beginning of all this, which you broke apart. • Save the top wafer for last. • Don’t forget to write the “aus” last…..at the end of your sentence or question.

  21. GO AHEAD • Eat the last part of your oreo….the top wafer that you took off at the very beginning but SAVED FOR LAST. • …eat the “aus.”

  22. And that’s the proper way to eat an oreo • Separate, twist if needed • Keep all the good stuff in the middle • Save the separated part for last
