Intelligent traffic system or ITS involve an interaction between all the components, including drivers, public transportation, pedestrians and the traffic management system. In order to increase the efficiency of the actual systems, adaptive signal systems, route planning, driver advisory and automated vehicles are some of the goals set up. There is a strong need for intelligent traffic systems as cities and municipalities are facing challenges of urban growth. This growth has fuelled demand for transportation. Traffic in cities is getting bad to worse with the number of vehicles growing with every passing year. Mobility has become a challenging issue as there has been a considerable growth in urban centers. It is necessary to know that roads are a long term infrastructure asset and once they are built, it can be very costly to redirect or widen them, especially in areas that are within the city. These factors have led to the need for technological solutions through which traffic management becomes easy and the traffic flows efficiently. This will increase the capacity of city roads and also help in reducing environmental impact and delays. Many cities across the globe are already making use of the intelligent traffic system. What an Intelligent Traffic System does? Also referred to as Intelligent Transport System, the ITS involves advanced control of the traffic via real time data input and interactive communication with the drivers to make the best use of transport systems. Smart systems have been designed for dealing with traffic issues, providing drivers with the best experience. Such systems have been deployed worldwide, especially on high load city streets and congested highways. Intelligent Traffic System interacts with the drivers and supplies them valuable information and guides them towards routes where traffic load is minimum. This is helpful in smoothening their journey. Some elite systems also demonstrate extra lanes for increasing traffic rate and reducing the load. This is quite useful during rush hour times. This system can also guide drivers who are driving under low visibility conditions such as the foggy weather during winter season. In some systems, the road ‘lights up’ for showing the path to the drivers. This helps in avoiding potential accidents. With the ITS system, pay-as-you-go service can also be utilized at toll stations. This helps in eliminating the time wastage at toll stations. In this case, the system reads a special sticker on the car, identifying the passing vehicle and billing the toll fees online automatically. If a driver is violating the traffic rules, he/she can be identified using a feature that takes a photo of the car, focusing particularly on the driver and the license plate. These features and functions of the intelligent traffic system are based on the heavy exchange of data between control centers and roads.
