  4. Drug Related Death Panels • National Drug Related Death Monitoring Group – chaired by the Welsh Assembly • Four regional panels – 6 monthly meetings • Data collated from post-inquest files and questionnaires sent to service providers. • Lessons learned

  5. Ambulance and police services • Protocol stating that police will not routinely attend overdose incidents. • Police will only attend if: • The person dies • The ambulance staff want back up • Emergency services are called to an address where they have experienced problems in the past

  6. Naloxone availability • Wales is ahead of the game distributing Naloxone to drug users • Naloxone could be made available to: • Concerned others • Housing providers esp. hostels • Drug services and Tier 2 providers

  7. Embed harm reduction in working practices • Preparation work with service users • Partnership working with Tier 1 and 2 service providers • Peer education • Staff to explore overdose risk factors and injecting practices in detail with service users

  8. Early warning systems • Focal Point – EU warning system – detection of emerging trends • Public Health Wales alerts • OWL messaging system in Gwent • Systems within services • Drug services messages need to be timely, relevant and factual

  9. Workforce development • Induction and continuing personal development • Overdose prevention and response training • Naloxone training • Refresher courses

  10. Roles and responsibilities • Feed into early warning systems • Look after peers • Respect emergency services • Bear risk information in mind • Get trained and carry Naloxone • Utilise informal networks
