What is Social Media and Why is it Important? • Social Media is a form of communication that connects people through different channels on the internet. • It is important because it allows people to connect with each other instantly and creates opportunities for new ideas and increased productivity in the marketplace.

  3. Different Types of Social Media • MySpace • Facebook • YouTube • Twitter • LinkedIn • Blogging • FreeWebs

MySpace • MySpace is a social networking site designed to keep you in close contact with friends and family. • Unlike most social networking sites, Myspace is more laid-back, fun, and geared toward younger generations. • MySpace can benefit PR because it uses solely advertising and promotions which allows big companies to promote an upcoming product or service.

Pros and Cons of MySpace • Pros: • Not as many constraints on the content and creativity of your profile • Serves as free online promotion for both small and large businesses • All encompassing: You can create a profile, video archive, shopping networks, job placement, Myspace TV, and a Myspace blog • Cons: • Advertising has cluttered the site with music interrupts, commercials, and pop-ups • Easy to access someone's profile, weak privacy settings • Harder to navigate than most social media sites

  6. Facebook • Allows networking between students and professionals • Share your company easily with many people in your area • Great way to advertise your company and improve image

Pros and Cons of Facebook Pros: • Easy to use, find friends and other local businesses • Great way to reach a younger generation • Can control your own profile and privacy • Professional or Personal • Share pictures, videos and general information on personal page Cons: • Can damage a companies image if not used and monitored properly • Applications can cause clutter your page • Addicting!

  10. Twitter • Micro-blogging service • Traditional Uses • PR Uses • *Think of it as an RSS feed of your followers’ lives.

  11. Pros and Cons of Twitter • Pros: • Simple for the busy practitioner • Real-time news and status updates • Easy way to spread your releases, alerts, links • Capable of being informal, professional or both • Cons: • Highly addictive  • May have to scroll through feeds to find info you want

  12. LinkedIn • Search students and professionals for networking and hiring purposes. • Create and maintain existing relationships. • Resume online!

Pros and Cons of Linkedin Pros: • People search by first or last name. • Find recommended potential clients, service providers, subject experts, and partners. • Be sought out for business opportunities. • Search for jobs. • Post and distribute job listings. • Find high-quality passive candidates for internship or job positions. Cons: • Creating a profile that is unique. • Recommendations without proper LinkedIn connections.

Blogging • Blogging is a personal online discussion board where the user hosts and maintains a personal site about anything they are interested in or messages they want to get out to others. • Blogging is good for Public Relations because it allows someone to market themselves and their great writing abilities.

  15. Pros and Cons of Blogging Pros: • Bloggers can get their message out there. • Many blogging site to choose from. Cons: • Brainstorming an idea or topic to write. • Competing with other bloggers on similar topics and trying to get as many hits on your blog.

  16. FreeWebs • Allows you to create and manage your own personal website - for free! • Equipped with about me, portfolio and resume sections. • Provides a blogging tool, forum, guest book and working calendar. • Excellent for sharing photos, videos and music with colleagues, friends and family.

  17. Pros and Cons of Freewebs Pros: • Easy to setup an account • Several different tools to use • Personalized • Blogger friendly • Professionals can easily access your resume and portfolio Cons: • Start from scratch • Layouts are limited • Can be time consuming to customize and manage
