  15. Myth and Meaning A deeper unconscious level is felt to exist. This deeper level manifests itself in universal archaic images expressed in dreams, religious beliefs, myths, and fairytales. Carl Jung

  16. Separation of man from woman Separation of parents from children Separation of brother from brother Separation of people from God Exaltation of self over others Religions of the Book Describe the breakdown of the first family

  17. Breakdown of the First Family • Adam and Eve were the first human beings. • God’s hope for them: Grow to maturity, marry and form a family of true love. • What happened? They betrayed God and started their family outside of the Garden. • Humanity has lived outside the Garden ever since.

  18. God’s Commandment • Eating the fruit of Knowledge of Good and Evil” was not merely eating a fruit. • Love became corrupted and misdirected within the relationship of Adam and Eve. • Afterwards, they covered their lower parts.

  19. The Commandment not to eat of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil = Not to have sex before your love is mature; not to have sex outside of marriage. The Fall Was a Misuse of Love The fall of the first human ancestors was the misuse of love. Therefore, God’s ideal of love was destroyed by the Fall.

  20. Jainism “It is better to die than to indulge in partaking of forbidden lustful pleasure.” Uttarangasutram 22.42

  21. Hinduism “From lustful passions comes the confusion of the mind, then loss of memory, then negligence of duty… the ruin of reason and this leads to destruction.” BhagavadGita 2:63

  22. Christianity “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.” I Corinthians 6:18

  23. Islam “Do not come near adultery: for it is a shameful deed and evil, opening the road to other evils.” Qur’an 17:32

  24. Buddhism “The man who goes to the wife of another… digs up the very roots of life.” Dhammapada 18:247

  27. The proper use of conjugal love is central to the well-being of the family. It is also critical for social harmony, because world peace can be established only by creating ideal families of true love. Implications

  28. Result of the Fall: Fallen lineage • Selfish motives were injected into Adam and Eve. • By succumbing to Lucifer’s temptation, Adam and Eve placed themselves under his control. • Adam and Eve separated from God. • The spirit of rebellion , murder and violence passed on through Adam and Eve to their descendants, all humankind.

  29. Result of the Fall: Fallen lineage • Self-centeredness • Jealousy of others • Debased and tainted • Greed, seek power, money more than love • Delight in dominating others • Giving into temptation • Weak family ties
