  1. Green and Greener:The path to (more) sustainable data centers Chris Page Global Director, Energy & Sustainability Strategy February 1, 2012

  2. Are we green yet?

  3. More Good….instead of “less bad” Green designer William McDunough

  4. Derivatives: Velocity versus acceleration “The upward trend in the growth of data center energy usage has slowed…. ” (Data Center Dynamics, August 2011) “U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions Projected to Grow Slowly” (New York Times, April 2011)

  7. ….what are the “more good” opportunities for data centers?

  8. Pre-engineered building requires no welding. Less design cost, less construction cost = under $5M/MW to build 6 months or less to complete building No raised floor required “Wing” design achieved scalability – add when we need. Easy to make design changes Yahoo! Data Center Strategy: Fast,Cheap to Build, & Expandable “The future of data centers.” Fortune Magazine FASTER LOWER COST MORE EFFICIENT

  11. JULY 2011: 3rd Warmest July in 141 years of data Warmest Single Month in 56 Years 30 of 31 days over 80 degF high temp 12 days over 85 degF high temp Record temps for dates of 7/21 (95 F, dewpoint of 74 F!) and 7/22 (93F) First Summer Summary

  12. Ongoing efficiency work • Anticipating changes in Relative Humidity • Finding the sweet spot in fan efficiency • Boosting cooling even more in the winter to increase efficiency of server fans BUT: lower IT load + constant cooling load = worse PUE?

  18. ….is the cloud green?

  19. YAHOO!’S CLOUD Yahoo! Cloud Supports: 680M+ registered users 200PB+ of data 100Bn events/day 1.5M requests/second 11Bn page impressions/month

  22. Cloud is green because: • It creates economies of scale • Diversity & aggregation of loads from a variety of users = better server utilization • Flexibility of servers = greater reliability with less backup by individual, physical servers. • Ends the split between IT & Facilities

  23. ….Are we green yet on metrics?

  24. 45-55% humidity recommendation.Where did this belief come from ? Modern hw manufacturer warranty supports a much broader range (0-90% rh w/o condensation on/in gear.) Analyzed data (or lack thereof) related to humidification related hw failure from manufacturers. Conducted numerous lab exercises related to how high/low humidity affects servers. Legacy recommendation DID work very well to avoid paper punch cards from getting stuck in dinosaur era computers ?

  28. Solar + Wind + Data Centers….? • “100% wind-powered” data centers (RECs?) • Rutgers University’s Greenslot – run on Hadoop • HP, AMD, NYSERDA researchers at Clarkson University • …all working on using intermittent power sources to run data centers • ….potential game-changer for direct use of intermittent power?
