  1. Warm Up 9/4 What are the 5 themes of geograpghy? List 2 ways that we can use the 5 themes to study history.

  2. 5 Themes of Geography 1. Location: Can be absolute or relative. Absolute is a definite reference to locate a place. Ex. latitude/longitude, address, etc. Relative describes a place in connection to its environment and how it is related to other places. 2. Place: Describes the human and physical characteristics of a location. For example, mountains, rivers, beaches, animals, plant life. Human characteristics would include, culture, what they do to make a living, buildings that people created, religion, food, transportation. 3. Human-Environment Interaction: How have humans adapted and changed the environment of a place, this can have both positive and negative effects. 4. Movement: This looks at migration of people, ideas, trends, goods, resources, communications, religions, etc. 5. Region: Allows us to divide the world into more manageable units for study. They have some sort of unifying characteristic. Regions can be formal, such as towns, cities, counties, states, countries or informal such as "The South" or "The Midwest".

  4. The European Union (EU) What: The EU is an economic & political union of 28 member countries that are located in Europe. Some of the governing organizations include the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union & the European Parliament. Why: European countries wanted to put an end to extreme nationalism after WWII When: Founded in 1958

  6. The U.S.S.R Official Name: Union of Soviet Socialist Republics Founded: 1924 - after the Russian Revolution Had been run by a Czar (monarch) until the Revolution

Russia & Eastern Europe The USSR dissolved in 1991 Russia became it's own country Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan (newly formed countries in Central Asia) Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova (new Eastern European countries) Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Albania, Yugoslavia (countries freed from Soviet control, but not part of the USSR)
