Carpool • Morning Carpool • Students report to cafeteria with Ms. Bostick • School starts at 8:05am • Tardy students miss important math instruction • Come early – drop off starts at 7:35am • Students unbuckle seatbelt just BEFORE cone zone • -Practice unbuckling seatbelt and opening door by themselves • Do not block roundabout before carpool starts • - Staff members need to access parking lot through left lane

Carpool • Afternoon Carpool • Begins at 3:35pm ends at 4:00pm • - Students go to Homework Club if not picked up • Do not line up on Mira Vista before 3:20pm • Clearly display the yellow carpool tag on windshield or visor on • passenger side • Drive slowly so attendants can call in your carpool number • You must have the original yellow carpool tag to pick up your • student

Carpool • Tips • Carpool with other families • Decrease number of cars in line and speeds up the process • Pull all the way forward • Student exits car when line stops in cone zone • Student walks on sidewalk to student entrance • Pets need to stay away from opening door • -We only chase 2-legged kids, not 4-legged fur balls 

Uniform • Uniforms must be from Dennis Uniform and be on the approved • uniform list in the Parent Handbook • Sock colors are solid navy, red, white or black (no gray) • Tights and leggings are solid navy, black, red or white • Shoes must be closed toe and no higher than their ankle • Spirit Wear is for Fridays only • Only AA sweatshirts, sweaters and hoodies can be worn in class • Send a sweatshirt or jacket with your child each day • LABEL EVERYTHING

Kickboard • A tool for teachers and administrators to collect, analyze and share data regarding their students' academic and behavioral performance • Teachers are able to quickly recognize positive interactions with kids • Wonderful way for us to encourage and implement American Academy Manners and Character Traits! • Green color in planner=great day!! • Orange color in planner=rebel bucks taken away • Student earn “rebel bucks” for their behaviors • This is a work in progress and we are excited to implement it!

  10. Planner • Will come home every day • Child’s responsibility to bring back • Check your child’s homework • Sign in the designated spot to verify you have checked your child’s assignments/behavior color • Write in the “notes” section if your child is going somewhere different after school

Red Folder • Two Sides to the folder: Left at Home, Right Back to School • Items on Left side should be taken out and left at home • Return “Right” side back to school • This is homework and items that need to come right back to school • Will come home every night with (or without) assignments in it • Complete work as assigned by teacher (check planner) • Return to school every day Homework Folder

Due to increasing allergies, American Academy will no longer allow food for Birthdays, school parties, etc. • No Exceptions! • Your child may bring in small items like pencils, bubbles, stickers, etc. to share with the class on their birthday • Birthday Party invitations should not be brought to school to be handed out • Parent directory for addresses and names • Please hand out birthday invites on your own time Birthdays

  13. Curriculum *Language Arts Block: Reading, Spelling, Writing, Grammar - Core Knowledge Literacy - Shurley Grammar - Spalding - Step Up to Writing * Math: Saxon Math * Science: Foss Science/Next Gen * History: Core Knowledge

Language Arts Block • Core Knowledge Literacy: • Students learn and focus on Fluency, Vocabulary, and Text Comprehension • Shurley Grammar: • Students learn the parts of speech through repetition • Spalding: • Students learn about phonics and how it ties in with spelling, decoding, and reading. Spelling is focused on through phonogram sounds and spelling rules. • Step Up to Writing: • Students learn how to create a writing plan and turn it into a paragraph

Saxon Math 2 & 3 Homework: • Will be review for first few weeks • Check and assist with corrections as needed • Initial the top (per math expectations) of your child’s homework • Homework will be due daily and worth 20% of math grade • Saxon 3 WILL have homework at night • Saxon 2 will NOT have homework at night, grades will be taken in class Assessments: • Every 5 lessons–cumulative review from all previous lessons • Fact Assessment • Assessments are worth 80% of math grade

Homework • Reading homework will vary depending on your child’s teacher • We believe in sending home resources and activities that will encourage and excite your child to practice at home • Weekly Phonogram and Spelling Tests will be given • No Homework on the weekends! Enjoy with your family  • Missed school/Missed Work: • Students have 2 days for each EXCUSED absence to make up their work. Ex: If they were absent on Monday, work will be due on Wednesday. Missing Assignment notification will be sent, it is not late!

  20. Grading of Homework Grading Deductions: Students are responsible for their own work, including turning it in on time as well as making sure their name is on it. Points will be deducted for late or no name work Missing Work: 1 day late – 10%; 2 days late– 20%; 3-5 days– 50%; More than 5 days late=NO credit *** Missing Assignment Notifications will be sent even if your child was absent *** No Name Work: 10% STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE AND RETURN ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT ** T or Empty Box in Parent Portal means the assignment has not yet been graded **

Grading Timeline • Grading doesn’t occur instantly • Please allow us time to thoroughly grade your child’s assignments • Different assignments will take longer to be graded • Homework and In-Class Work – 3 business days • Assessments – 5 business days • Large Projects – 10 business days • Writing Assignments – 10 business days

Parent/Teacher Communication • We appreciate your support at home and in reinforcing our expectations here at school • Our focus during the day is on teaching your children, not responding to e-mails • Please be patient with us in responding as we work towards getting back to you within 48 business hours

  24. Parent/Teacher Conferences • There are 3 scheduled conferences for this school year: • October 3-4 • January 23-24 • May 15-16 • We will send out a sign up a week before the scheduled conference • Please only sign up for one slot per family, during the listed time, as we have many conferences to hold

  25. Volunteering • We so appreciate our volunteers! • Volunteer options will be available on the Shutterfly website that is created and managed by our Room Parent

  26. Second Grade Instructional Assistant • Our IA for 2nd grade is Mrs. Schroeder • We communicate constantly and are all working towards the same goal

  27. After School Activities/Attendance • Please remind your child daily where they are to go after school • Contact Front Office if there is a change in how your child is getting home as we do not always have the chance to look at our e-mails • Write in your child’s planner if they need help remembering where to go • It is so important that your kids are on time to school • They need to be here before 8:05
