  1. Research Paper Rough Draft 1 Commas & Semicolons

  2. Materials Needed • Research Paper Rough Draft 1 • Double-spaced • 500-750 words • A red pen

  3. Step 1 • Circle all of the subjects. • Grouped subjects count as one.

  4. Comma Rule 1 & Semicolon Rule 1 • If there is more than one circle in a sentence, separate the clauses correctly with a comma or semicolon.

  5. Comma Splice • If there is more than one circle in a sentence and the clauses are separated with a comma and no conjunction, then label the comma with “cs” for comma splice.

  6. Comma Rule 2 • If the sentence is not starting with a circled word(s), then the sentence is starting with an introductory word, phrase, or clause. Place the comma in the appropriate place. Be careful of the author’s useless words.

  7. Comma Rule 3-6 • There is no true way to prepare to check for these mistakes; it takes practice. Review the rough draft again looking for these mistakes.

  8. What’s Next… • Revise your Research Paper Rough Draft 1. • Title it Research Paper Final Draft and upload it to turnitin.com and have a copy ready to submit by 12/6.

  9. If the grader did not finish… • Finish the instructions in green, and then revise.
