  2. History • Around 1100 A.D. Inca Manco Capac founded the city of Cuzco • Cuzco was the political, military, religious, and cultural center of the Incan Empire for many years until its conquest in 1534 by the Spanish explorer, Francisco Pizarro.

  3. Geography • Machu Pichu, believed to be the last capital of the Incan Empire, is located some 75 miles northeast of Cuzco. • The Andes extend from Venezuela to Tierra del Fuego, off the Southern coasts of Chile and Argentina. Cuzco was built over two miles above sea level in the southeast part of the Peruvian Andes.

  4. Language • The Amerindian language of Quechua is spoken by the indigenous people of Cuzco. • Since 1975, Quechua has been Peru’s second official language, the first being Spanish. • Quechua is spoken by 70 % of the population. Riki= yes Mana= no Añay= thank you

  5. La Vida Populated for the last 3,000 years, Cuzco is considered the oldest settlement on the American continent. Cuzco has evolved into a modern city, which has seen an influx of immigrants from all over the world, the contributions of whom can be seen in many aspects of life in Cuzco. In fact, the popular dish chifa is a favorite in Peru, but is actually Chinese-style fried rice. Many Asians as well as Europeans, Africans, and North American call Cuzco home.
