A. Agriculture – Neolithic Revolution 1. People learn they can plant seeds themselves 2. domestication: the process of changing plants and animals to make them more useful to humans. a.  domestication of plants b. domestication of animals 1. sheep, goats, cattle 2. milk, food, wool, carry loads

  3. 3. People focus on other things, not just food. • a. clothing • b. permanent settlements (towns) • c.  population growth • d. government • e. religion – ceremonies & megaliths

  4.  II. Controlling Water   A. Due to floods and the drying up of rivers, farmers needed to control the river’s flow.   B. Farmers used irrigation and canals to control river flow. 1. irrigation: a way of supplying water to an area of land 2. canals: human-made waterways

  5. III. Food Surpluses  • A. Increased amounts of food led to surpluses which meant that fewer people needed to farm.   B. As a result, new occupations developed. 1. division of labor: the type of arrangement in which each worker specializes in a particular task or job.

  6. IV. The Appearance of cities A. Settlements grew in size, creating cities between 4000 and 3000 B.C. B. They were power bases-they were the political, religious, cultural, and economic centers of civilization.
