  1. Corrected final exam time for BIO 304 Friday, May 6 8:00 a.m. Please make sure you note the correct time on your schedules!

  2. Email your 4-digit PIN to: ann.morris@uky.edu

  3. Lecture 2:Single Gene Inheritance

  4. We need mutants!

  5. The seven phenotypic pairs studied by Mendel

  6. Cross fertilization of pea plants

  7. Mendel’s results

  8. approx. 3:1

  9. Mendel’s laws • “Particulate unit factors” control each trait • In each individual unit factors exist in pairs • yellow seed parental = two yellow factors • green seed parental = two green factors • 3. When two different unit factors for the same trait are present in an individual, one factor is dominant and the other is recessive • F1 generation = 1 yellow factor + 1 green factor • YELLOW factor dominant to green factor • 4. During gamete formation, the paired factors separate; each gamete has an equal likelihood of receiving either factor • F1 gametes: 50% yellow factor and 50% green factor • Four possible combinations of gametes at fertilization: • 1. yellow and yellow 2. green and green • 3. yellow and green 4. green and yellow

  10. Explanation of Mendel’s results Punnett square

  11. Chromosome structure Centromere Homologous chromosomes Telomere

  12. DNA replication occurs before mitosis Sister chromatids

  13. Mitosis

  14. Meiosis: Synapsis dyad tetrad, bivalent

  15. Mitosis and meiosis summary reductional division equational division

  16. Nuclear division at the DNA level

  17. Molecular nature of Mendel’s seed color alleles product of sgr gene acts here Y = functional sgr enzyme y = nonfunctional sgr y/y: no functional sgr produced so seed remains green Y/y: yellow because some functional sgr enzyme is produced

  18. Phenylketonuria (PKU) disease

  19. Mutations

  20. Haploinsufficientphenotpyes Pax 6 mutation normal AC absent Olfactory bulb hypoplasia Pax 6 mutation phenotype: aniridia, hyposmia
