  2. What Exactly Are Green Roofs? A green roof system is an extension of the existing roof which involves a high quality water proofing and root repellant system, a drainage system, filter cloth, a lightweight growing medium and plants. Green roof systems may be modular, with drainage layers, filter cloth, growing media and plants already prepared in movable, interlocking grids, or, each component of the system may be installed separately. Green roof development involves the creation of "contained" green space on top of a human-made structure. This green space could be below, at or above grade, but in all cases the plants are not planted in the "ground'.  Green roofs can provide a wide range of public and private benefits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zCyyF01CL4

  3. HiStOrY The original inspiration for contemporary green roofs came from Iceland, where sod roofs and walls have been used for hundreds of years. The sod roofs soon became popular throughout Scandinavia. This Icelandic style came about because of a lack of natural resources, so people had to make do with sod and stone. Green roof technologies originated in Germany over 30 years ago and now are popular throughout Europe and various places in North America.

  4. BeNeFiTs • In photosynthesis, plants use energy from the sun to turn CO2 into O2 and chlorophyll. • Plant roots, and their attached enzymes and fungi, filter and treat rainwater as it percolates through the ground. • Protection of roof membrane • Sound Insulator • Potential for grants related to energy efficiency and/ or green roofs • Reduction of dust and smog levels • Rubber, polyethylene, and expanded polystyrene can are suitable for the production of drainage elements.
