  1. Roofs Gone Green Cooling Cities and Helping Society by Roland, Abbey, Alphy, and Elizabeth

  2. Evan Green what can I do to stop the pavement from heating up? Is this global warming? Roofs Gone Green Why is the city getting too hot? Cooling Cities and Helping Society

  3. Urban Island Heat Affect What? Why? What Now?

  4. Urban Heat Island Effects Effects: -Flooding, - high temperatures and pressure -increase in greenhouse gases

  5. Who We Are Roofs Gone Green: Cooling Cities and Helping Society We are a committee that writes building code proposals in order to implement green roofs to "high priority" buildings. We are writers, researchers, architects, and city planners.

  6. Building Codes Through research we find the buildings that are affected the most by urban heat island effect. -Design of roof -Buildings proximity to other buildings -Angle of sunlight

  7. Roofs Gone Green Mission Statement Our goal is to increase awareness of the urban heat island effect and implement more green roofs in the process. We plan to start in Eugene, Oregon and spread throughout the nation.

  8. Why Eugene? -Small enough to start the project, large enough to have an impact. Also Eugene is one of U.S.'s greener cities.

  9. Process -Researchers will figure out which buildings need green roofs -Writers will write a proposal outlining conditions - Architects will look at the roof designs -City planners will assists us

  10. Educating Others: How Green Roofs Work and What They Do "Green roofs supplement traditional vegetation without disrupting urban infrastructure -- they take a neglected space and make it useful." • Vegetation acts like a sponge • Absorbs UV radiation • Absorbs Water • Absorbs Carbon and other air pollutents • Evapotranspiration and Shade

  11. Why Should You Get Involved? -Cities in the future will be even more densely compact -Reduces effects of Global Warming -Green Roofs last longer and save you money in the long run -Provides benefits to you and others as well as your surroundings

  12. Other Organizations and Related Projects -Green Roofs For Green Cities -FBB in Germany -Britain's Eco-nightclubs -RPI's center for Architecture Science and Ecology Program

  13. Timeline 7. We need to write a new building code incorporating green roofs for Eugene,Oregon and then submit our proposal to International Code Council. 5. Promote green roofs through media, fundraisers, and other city events 6. We need to determine which building NEED green roofs 4. We need to get the technology permission from Green Roofs For Healthy cities. 3. We need to do the research necessary to find out which buildings are high priority 2.Second,we need to secure funding. 1.First, we need to target cities that suffer from the urban island heat effect and need green roofs

  14. Funding -Corporations -Taxes -Fundraisers -Grants

  15. Evan Green's Happy Ending -Evan started to educate others about the Urban Island Heat Effect -The citizens started fundraisers and got the attention of the local media -Taxes, fundraisers, and corporations contributed to the Green Roof movement -Green Roofs for Healthy Cities agreed to lend the technology to Emerald Valley -Building codes were passed for green roofs on certain buildings in the city -Green Roofs were built in Emerald City -Evan lived happily ever after
