  2. Ping • One of the simplest probing tools • ping www.netbook.cs.purdue.edu • Can be used to test whether a remote computer is alive • Ping sends a message to specified computer • wait a short time for a response • if a response arrives, ping reports that the remote computer is alive

  3. Ping • Possible options • user can specify the size of the packet sent • compute the round trip time • repeatedly send one message per second until the program is stopped

  4. Traceroute • Use to determine the intermediate computers along the path to a remote computer • traceroute www.netbook.cs.purdue.edu • Provide more information than ping
