Challenges to Communicating With Publics About Hazards • People have trouble with probabilities about risks • General statements about DANGER! don’t work alone • Even an understood or perceived won’t spur change alone • People judge a risk statement by credibility of source too • Technical information has to be put in audience’s frame of reference and made simple. More is not better alone.. • People want to confirm hazard messages with others • Experience with hazards doesn’t guarantee understanding • People judge risks on social-psychological dimensions too

Some Guidelines for Overcoming Hazard Communication Barriers • Explain facts in non-technical terms • Use multiple, credible sources • Repeat information: multiple media • Tell people what they can do with info. • Give people opportunities to confirm info. • Don’t rely exclusively on electronic media
