  2. What is persuasion? A means of convincing people: • to buy a certain product • to believe something or act in a certain way • to agree with a point of view

  3. Common persuasive techniques often used in advertising • Slogan • Repetition • Bandwagon • Testimonial • Emotional Appeal • Expert Opinion Purpose?

  4. Repetition: The name of a product is repeated many times HEAD ON Apply directly to the forehead HEAD ON Apply directly to the forehead HEAD ON Apply directly to the forehead

  5. Bandwagon A statement suggesting that everyone is using a specific product, so you should too

  6. Testimonial A well-known person supports a product or service. • Selena Gomez uses only Pantene shampoo, so should you.

  7. Emotional Appeal A person is made to have strong feelings about a situation or product Example: Your donation might just get this puppy off the street and into a good home.

  8. Expert opinion Experts approve this product, so you should use it “Four out of five dentists recommend sugarless gum for their patients who chew gum”

  9. Logical Appeal Facts, numbers, logical reasoning, and information that sounds “scientific”. Example: A Snickers bar has 280 calories and 30 grams of sugar. That’s not very healthy.

  10. Plain Folks Appeal Ordinary people sell a message. If people believe and trust in you, you’re more likely to persuade them. Example: Believe me! I’ve been there before. I’m just like you. I understand.

  11. Propaganda • Propaganda – the use of language, ideas, information, and rumors to support one side of an argument and /or discredit another.
