  1. Ancient India The Rise of the Maurya Empire Chandragupta Maurya came to power in northeastern India around 321 B.C. He united a number of warring states and expanded his empire with a massive army. His improvements, such as irrigation systems and roads that allowed trade with distant lands, brought great wealth to India. Section 4: Empires of Ancient India 1 of 4

  2. Ancient India Asoka’s Leadership Chandragupta’s grandson, Asoka, further expanded the Maurya Empire through warfare. After a bloody battle against Kalinga, Asoka renounced violence and converted to Buddhism. He issued writings that supported the Buddha’s message and sent missionaries into other parts of Asia to spread Buddhism.   3. Ancient India The Rich Cultures of the Guptas Between periods of conflict among India’s small states and foreign invaders, the Gupta dynasty ruled northern India from A.D. 320 to 540. Under the Guptas, Indian scholars, writers, and scientists did advanced work. Mathematicians invented the decimal point and the number system that we use today.
