Sea God’s Origin • After Kronos was overthrown, his sons rolled dice for his empire • Zeus chose the sky, Poseidon chose the sea, and Hades was stuck with the underworld • Poseidon chose the sea because it was the best place for adventures and secrets • Poseidon decided to build a huge underwater palace

  3. Poseidon’s Personality • Greedy, aggressive, and quarrelsome • Implacable and persistent • Would hold a grudge • When pleased, he had a radiant smile • Liked jokes, and thought of many curious forms to give the creatures he made • Liked to scare water nymphs with monsters he createdsuch as the octopus, squid, or jellyfish

Athene vs. Poseidon • The people of Athens were afraid that Poseidon would seize their children so they prayed for help and Athene heard them • Athene planted an olive tree next to the spring Poseidon had created • Poseidon was mad at Athene and created a storm blowing a fishing fleet out to sea • After a quarrel between the two, the city was awarded to Athene

Poseidon’s Affairs • Chose Thetis as his queen but rejected her, because it was prophesized that any son born to her would be greater than his father, so he chose Amphitrite • Wanted to marry Demeter, goddess of moon, so Demeter asked him to create a beautiful land animal • Made a horse, but was so pleased with himself, so he forgot about Demeter and rode away on the horse
