Uniform Definitions • Participant vs. Contact • Participant: An individual that participates in direct education activities (regardless of the number of times he or she has participated) • “Unduplicated count” • Contact: An interaction in which a FSNE participant participates in a direct education activity • Note: These definitions only apply to Direct Education

  10. Scenario #1 • Q: Mrs. Jones attends a six (6) lesson nutrition education series at her local community center. The series runs from January through March. How is this information recorded? • A: Once (1) as a participant and five (5) times as a contact

Uniform Definitions • Direct vs. Indirect • Direct: Interventions where a participant is actively engaged in the learning process with an educator and/or interactive media • Indirect: Distribution of information and resources, including any mass communications, public events, and materials distribution that DO NOT meet the definitions of Direct Education or Social Marketing campaigns • Key Difference • Demographic information

  12. Scenario #1 • Q: Your program is at a community event passing out recipes and conducting a food demonstration. Demographic information is not collected on participants. How is this information recorded? • A: Indirect education as communication/ events.

  13. Scenario #2 • Q: Your program is at a community event teaching the benefits of low fat or fat free milk while conducting a milk taste test. Each participant fills out demographic information while recording their results. How is this information recorded? • A: Direct education

  14. Scenario #3 • Q: Billy, a 1st grader, receives FSNE in his classroom. The FSNE instructor sends home a newsletter and fun food news for his parents to read. How is this information recorded? • A: Billy’s interaction is counted as direct education while his parents interaction is counted as indirect.

  15. Scenario #4 • Q: Shannon, a 5th grader, learns about balancing caloric intake and energy expenditure in her classroom. She is given a crossword puzzle to complete at home and returns the completed copy to her teacher. How is this information recorded? • A: Both interactions are recorded is direct education.
