  1. Read Screen

  2. Read Screens • One of the best ways to slow down a fast rushing defensive front • Easy decision by QB, can be made on the drop • Blocked the same by the lane • Linemen only have to be aware of which side is the read side, which side the screen side. Read side does not hold their blocks as long as screen side. Read side is set and go, screen side is 2 counts and release. • Can add fake screens to the scheme very easily • Are good against zone or man coverage • Can add a middle screen to compliment the read, it will not be a read screen • Can use multiple formations but do not change the blocking scheme if you want consistency.

  3. Read Screens • Can give a no read call if you wan to throw the screen side instead of the read side. IF QB is struggling with the read, this is an option. • Practice points 1. Practice a period throwing screens to both sides of the play, QB reads and throws to the opposite side. Every receiver and lineman gets live side work. Great drill for end of practice conditioning period. Every rec. catches every ball in this period 2. Make sure to script DE reads to give QB a diverse look at what he will see; DE drop, DE rush, DE peel, DE stands still. If he rushes or stands, the ball must go to the back!

  4. Read Side-Same as other Screen Play Side-Same as other Screen

  5. Read Side-Same as other screen Play Side-Same as other screen except #2 Receiver gets the ball, #1 blocks

  6. Screen to the right -QB reads the left DE • Read Side • X-Crack 1st Threat Inside • H-Wide Flare-Look for Ball quick • Tackle-Pass Set Go to Outside Defender Now • Guard-Pass Set 1 Count Go to Alley Block 1st Threat • Center-Block Read side 2 counts Go to 1st LB Threat • Play Side Guard-Block 2 Counts go to 1st LB Threat • Play Side Tackle-Pass Pro DE Do Not Release • Z-Run 5 Step Fade and Return Behind LOS Make Catch Under Control Get Upfield • Y-Block #1 Outside • F-Go to Alley Block 1st Threat • QB-3 Step Drop Reading End-IF End Rushes Throw to H IF End Peels Turn and Throw to Z

  7. Coaching Points • If End does nothing throw to Back • Make a decision quickly and do not hesitate, go with your 1st gut instinct • 3-Read side linemen must get out fast • Linemen do not have to block them any particular way, just cover them up • Back should look to get as wide as possible on his flare release • Screen Receiver does not have to run the tunnel, catch on the perimeter, find your blockers • Throw often and early to slow rush and tire the Defense

  8. Read Side-Same as other screen Play Side-Same as other screen

  9. Reminders for Screens • Screens can be run out of any formation you choose, but do not do anything that would change the blocking assignments • Screens can be run from under but are more difficult for the QB • Make sure that your lineman know that they are responsible for an area, not a man • Handle Zone Blitzes as area blocks. If they drop to your area, go get them

  10. Philosophy of Screens • Not just a 3rd and long play • Run out of any formation and motion combination that you want. Change weekly. • Practice daily for a short period with linemen so that your backs and receivers get their timing. We use this as a conditioning tool during practice. • Try to run screens early in each quarter an as you feel the defense is trying to pick up their pace. This takes advantage of blitzes and stunts. • Have a fake screen deep pass option off screen action.
