Scholarships Academic Merit – based on UAC Academic Rank Equity – other criteria include financial disadvantage and students in equity target groups such as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students, students with a disability, medical conditions etc. Miscellaneous – career aspirations or personal attributes Sports – to encourage and support students on the basis of demonstrated sporting ability, academic merit and commitment to the sporting achievements of the University. Equity Scholarships In addition to our full range of scholarships, two main types of equity scholarships are offered: Commonwealth Scholarships, funded by the Federal Government includes: • Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS) • Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) • Indigenous Access Scholarships (IAS) Equity Scholarships Scheme University of Newcastle (ESSUN) funded by the University of Newcastle Student Administration/Fees & Scholarship | www.newcastle.edu.au

Commonwealth Scholarships (CS) The program aims: • To assist students from low socio-economic backgrounds to participate in higher education • To increase students' options in accessing higher education in particular Indigenous students and students from a rural or regional area. • Scholarships offered through the CS program provide financial assistance for a maximum period of 4 years to disadvantaged students studying in an undergraduate degree program. Commonwealth Scholarships –Benefits in 2008 Commonwealth Education Costs - CECS - $2,162 pa for up to 4 years Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships – CAS - $4,240 pa for up to 4 years Indigenous Access Scholarship – IAS - $4,080 is a once only payment Student Administration/Fees & Scholarship | www.newcastle.edu.au

  7. Equity Scholarships Scheme University of Newcastle (ESSUN) An initiative designed to assist financially and educationally disadvantaged students take up and continue study at the University. ESSUN require that financial hardship be demonstrated. This can be either by: • Receipt of Centrelink payment that is means and income tested. • Proof of exceptional financial hardship Benefits in 2008: $4000 pa and $2000 pa for degree duration Student Administration/Fees & Scholarship | www.newcastle.edu.au

Applying for Equity Scholarships All Applications for CS and ESSUN are lodged with UAC • Applications open early August – in line with UAC Admissions process • Closing dates in line with cut offs for Admission e.g. on time by 30/9 • Last applications will close early February 2009 – no charge for late CS applications • Students will need to provide information relevant to their circumstances • Medical condition disability • Carer responsibilities • Evidence of relocation due to pending studies Student Administration/Fees & Scholarship | www.newcastle.edu.au

Vice Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence To support academic excellence and provide encouragement and an incentive for academically gifted students to study at the University of Newcastle. Promote the University’s commitment to local and regional school community. The nominee is to have achieved the best performance in their Year 12 studies. Vice Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence – more information • Nomination Forms will be sent to all schools in the University’s Rural and Regional Preference Scheme – approx 250 schools. • Nomination forms will be sent to schools in early August. • Nominations to be notified to University by mid October. Reminders will be sent prior to this. • Nominations received after the closing date will not be accepted. • In 2007 there were 150 nominations for the award.   11. What benefit is this for the nominated student? All nominees will be awarded a Certificate recognising their Academic Excellence for the study in Year 12. • Certificates will be mailed directly to the school for presentation. • If the student accepts an offer for study with the University they will be entitled to a one year scholarship of $2000. This will be paid in the first semester of study. • Students who choose to defer their study for a period of no longer than one academic year are able to take up the scholarship once they enrol in their first semester of study in the subsequent year. University of Newcastle Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme • The objective of the Scheme is to provide financial support for academically outstanding undergraduate students who completed their Higher School Certificate in the year prior to entering university. • The student will need to have attended a school located within the area to which the University's Regional and Rural Preference Scheme applies. • The Scholarships will be assigned on merit without regard to the student's campus of enrolment, but such that in any year, no more than five students enrolled in any program will be awarded scholarships. • Students with a Universities Admission Index (UAI) of 95 or greater will be eligible for a scholarship.   13. University of Newcastle Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme • Each scholarship under the scheme will provide a once-only sum of $4,000 for the first year of a program. Funded in 2 equal payments. • A maximum of 40 scholarships will be awarded annually under the scheme. • Scholarships will be automatically awarded. • Students who choose to defer their study for a period of no longer than one academic year are able to take up the scholarship once they enrol in their first semester of study in the subsequent year.   14. What else should I know? Funds for all scholarships will not be paid to students until after the census date in Semester 1 and Semester 2 of each year. • This is to ensure that the student is enrolled in courses • Each year students who are in receipt of an Equity Scholarship will need to provide information regarding their ongoing eligibility • Equity Scholarships are awarded for a maximum of 4 years. • Once an Equity Scholarship has been awarded a student does not have to apply each year to have this continued. More Scholarships for First Year Students Scholarships available to commencing students in 2008 included: • Port Waratah Coal Services Limited Undergraduate Scholarships – 2 @ $7000 p.a • David Beer Undergraduate Scholarships – 12 @ $4000 p.a • Coal and Allied Community Trust Scholarships – 12 @ $5000 • Xstrata Coal Undergraduate Scholarships in Earth Sciences – 6 @ $8000 • Hartley French Undergraduate Scholarships – 10 @ $2500 • University of Newcastle Sports Scholarships – 6 @ $1000 • Faculty of Science and Information Technology Undergraduate Scholarships – 11 @ $2000 • Faculty of Business and Law – 7 @ $1500 • Sheather and Merrigan Scholarship – 1 @ $5000 • Godfrey Tanner Undergraduate Scholarship - 1 @ $3000 Student Administration/Fees & Scholarship | www.newcastle.edu.au
