  1. Longitudinal Feedback Measurementsfor the CERN Accelerator School Diana Rand Supervisor: Heiko Damerau, Christine völlinger

  2. Outline • Motivation for the project • Demonstrating basic types of RF feedback in particle accelerators • Direct RF feedback • Frequency domain • Cavity excited by a train of bunches • 1-turn delay feedback

  3. Motivation • Prepare practical exercises for the next CAS for RF-engineering • Testing the experimental set-up • Refining and adding new ideas to the exercises • Creating instruction manuals for future students

  4. The test cavity • Basic parameters: • 57 MHz • 1700 • 18 Ω • Low resonance frequency allows for easy measurements

  5. Cavity with direct feedback • Practical exercise introducing direct feedback S21 Without feedback Power combiner Amplifier Cavity in out With feedback Feedbackpath 1 MHz

  6. Cavity excited by bunch train • Simulating a train of bunches by exiting the cavity with a pulse generator Trigger signal Train of bunches at fRF/2 Cavity response Repetition rate fRF/2 filling decay 5 ns pulses

  7. 1-turn delay feedback • Constructing a comb filter • Replacing the direct feedback with the comb filter Power combiner Power combiner Cavity Cavity Amplifier Amplifier in in out out Feedbackpath

  8. 1-turn delay feedback S21 Without feedback 1 MHz With feedback

  9. Summary • Testing and finalizing the experimental set-up • Adding new ideas • A practical exercise with excitation of the cavity by a train of bunches and time domain measurements • Completing an instruction document
