How A Nerve Impulse Travels Impulses are received from the dendrites attached to the cell body. The impulse then travels down the axon and into the axon terminals, which are attached to the dendrites of another cell and the process repeats. When the impulse reaches the axon terminal, neurotransmitters are released into the synaptic cleft. This opens up ion channels in the post-synaptic cell and the process repeats.
Neurotransmitters Involved • Acetylcholine – blocks synapse
Neuron At Rest • Not stimulated – membrane polarized • Outside – positive • Inside - negative • Outside of membrane – more Na+ ions • Inside of membrane – more K+ ions • Negatively charged proteins and nucleic acids
Looking At The TV • Stimulus (light) reaches resting neuron (receptors in eyes) • Gated ion channels open and Na+ rushes inside cell, cell becomes depolarized • Impulse travels down axon between nodes of Ranvier • Acetylcholine released into synapse • Pupils constrict/dilate depending upon lighting, and you can see the tv • Acetylcholine is inhibited and returns to the axon • The K+ ions then travel outside the cell, and it is polar again • Ion channels close • Carries on to next neuron’s dendrites • Refractory period – Na+ and K+ are returned to original sides of membrane; cell doesn’t respond to any stimuli
Clicking Buttons and Holding Controller • Stimulus (feeling of controller in hand) is received by a resting neuron (in hand) • Na/K pump releases Na+ ions into membrane • Impulse travels down the axon • Membrane depolarizes and Ca2+ ions enter the cell • Acetylcholine moves across synapse and bonds to proteins on the neuron membrane that’s receiving the impulse • Muscles contract, allowing you to grip and push buttons on the controller • Acetylcholine is taken back into axon
