Explain what is meant by the term ‘genetic screening’. • You have three minutes to work in pairs or in groups- discuss and record on a piece of paper all you know about genetic screening. • You will be required to nominate two people in your group to feedback answers to the rest of the class.   3. How reliable are genetic tests? • Very reliable? Hands up- and move to RHS of class • Not very reliable? Hands up- move to the LHS of class • Not sure? Implications of Genetic Testing • Note that although the scientific community continues to debate the best way to deliver them (genetic testing) to the public and to medical communities that are often unaware of their scientific and social implications, it is important we know and consider what implications these might have on those ‘benefiting’ from it • Write down implications of genetic testing-as many as you can. • Then classify them as scientific implications or social implications- You might want to draw a table with two columns for easy classification. Implications of Genetic Testing • How does personal genetic information affect an individual and society's perceptions of that individual - Whole class discussion (6 minutes task) • Genetic testing can be used to make a decision about whether a pregnancy should be continued or not Your task Give three arguments for and three against the decision to continue the pregnancy if Cystic Fibrosis or a major disorder is detected in the embryo.   8. What are genetic disorders? • A genetic disorder is a disease caused by abnormalities in an individual’s genetic material (genome). • Environmental and genetic factors have roles in the development of any disease Teaching Solutions www.weirdscience-discoveries.typepad.com

Why do we have genes that cause genetic disorders? • Disease - Very often disease occurs when genes are unable to work properly • Mutation – A gene is mutated in a way that prevents it from encoding a normal, functional protein product. • Environmental factors Teaching Solutions www.weirdscience-discoveries.typepad.com

  10. -Hints to help students reach a decision It is important to know that if you are tested for or diagnosed with a genetic disorder and this information becomes a part of your • medical record (kept by the hospital) • insurance companies (for insurance purposes) • Employers (your suitability/job fitness) and sometimes • other agencies may also have to access this information. • Without adequate legal measures to protect individuals from misuse of their medical information, individuals diagnosed with certain genetic conditions potentially could be denied insurance coverage, employment, or other benefits.   11. Homework • Is it right to use genetic screening? Give arguments for and against. Research for more information on the internet • Case study – write up a story or draw a cartoon, beginning with one of the following ideas “ I started life three months ago after a fusion between a sperm cell and an egg cell…..however six days ago, they found out………….and now I am going aborted. • Is it right to interfere? • Is it right to use genetic screening? • Should my parents to be opt out of abortion?
