  1. How did the media represent the decision of the USA to invade Iraq? Joshua Katzen Zach Rofe Connor Sweeney

Background Information • After 9/11 the American public didn’t feel safe • UN inspectors searched Iraq for WMDs • Oct 2001: Bush tries to build a coalition in Middle East • Nov 2001: Foreign policy leaders state that Al-Qaeda is the threat, not Iraq • August 2002: Announces that Pentagon plans a “campaign based on hope” • US warned that invading Iraq could destabilize the Middle East and destroy the war on terror • Cheney announces that Saddam had WMDs and that he must be countered

USA media before the war • The media pressured the news to focus on Iraq’s bad behavior • Instilled fear in the public causing them to support an invasion • Media had a set of truth and did their best to keep people within their wall of truths • Senator Kennedy (MA) made a speech questioning the war and it was ignored • Referred to U.S. forces in Iraq as “coalition forces”

  4. Media from other countries • Arab media broadcasted scenes of civilian casualties, calling them “martyrs” • Focused on the negatives that a U.S. invasion would cause • Referred to U.S. forces in Iraq as “invading forces”
