  2. American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009: Title I, Part A Recovery Funds for Grants to LEAs • Opportunity to implement innovative strategies to improve education for at-risk children

  3. Intent of Congress • Use of Title I funds for early childhood programs and activities • Commitment to expand early childhood educational opportunities and create more seamless web of high quality services for families

  4. Potential Uses of Funds • Strengthen and expand early childhood education by providing resources to align Title I Pre-K with state early learning standards for grades K-3 • Expand high quality Title I Pre-K programs

  6. Flexible Funding • Title I funds can be used for preschool or to supplement or expand other early childhood education programs, such as state-funded prekindergarten, Head Start, Even Start, or Early Reading First. • Title I funds may be used in conjunction with existing programs.

  7. Examples of Pre-K Quality Investments • Professional Development • Teacher Salaries (Increase or Maintain) • Research Based Curriculum and Alignment with K-3 Standards • Instructional Materials • Full Day

  8. Examples of Pre-K Quality Investments (continued) • Comprehensive Services • Longitudinal Data • Family Involvement • Assessment – Monitoring the Children’s Progress

Suggestions • Build relationships with early childhood partners • Champion early education using research and data • Dollars are flexible • Build on existing resources in communities • Invest in coordinated district-wide solutions • Link vulnerable children and families to family supports and health services • Leverage state and federal funds—and capitalize on funding opportunities.

Use Title I Stimulus $ for Pre-K: It Is A No-Brainer!!! • Benefits of Pre-K Exist Well Into Adulthood – Good Child Outcomes • Rare Opportunity for a Great Investment! • Reduces Spending on Remedial Funding (also funded by Title I) • States are EXPECTED to Use Some of the $ for Early Childhood
